New Recoil lug for 700?

I am rebarreling a rem 700 300wm, should I upgrade the recoil lug over the factory lug? will there be any real difference in shooting? my Rifle is an older bdl that is atleast 14 years old.

It is also getting bedded in a new B&c Medalist stock,
the barrel is going to be a Kreiger 26" Mtu 6 flute 5r 300wm stainless, with Badger fte 5/8-24 brake.

Benchmark has re-barreled a couple of Magnums for me with a new,heavier Lug each time.That Stock will need to be milled out more for this anyway.

im sure surface grinding the factory lug is sufficient enough. but if im going though the trouble of rebarreling/truing an action i say might as well spend the 20-25 bucks on a new lug.

i suggest pacific tool and gauge, very reasonable price and ships quick. they have 3 thicknesses i believe, the standard remingtion width, .25", and something in between, .2"? can be had with parallel or tapered sides

The thicker lug is not required.

An aftermarket or gunsmith ground factory recoil lug is sufficent for most rifles. MTU is a big contour though and a thicker lug would help take the bend out of a thinner lug.

Alot depends on how the smith beds it as well....you could run a factory thickness lug with a Rockwell axel....if the barrel is properly supported as to avoid undesired stress.

The thicker lug is a good safeguard with a heavy barrel but the name doesn't always mean it is worth the price.....just buy a PTG pinned lig and be done...I think they are less than $20 for my gunsmith....cheap but manufactured with quality.

also, will there be any strength difference between the 4142 steel and the 416 stainless steel?

I belive the 4142 is chromoloy in the white.

(needs to be coated or blued)

The 416 Stainless is a Marine grade Stainless steel. Most SS items that are actual SS currently are 304 Stainless. I don't remember all of the particulars but it is a higher grade SS.

(not nessecary to coat....just stains "less" than high carbon chromoly)
