New reloader, caliber questions

Hello fellow reloaders. I am new to the forum and have only been reloading for one year. I am trying to gain more accuracy by reloading but seem to be having difficulty. I am currently reloading a .270 win, but am thinking of buying a .308 rem 700p. What my question is is could I expect greater accuracy from reloading the .308? What I mean is is the .308 a better cartridge or have a better BC so it is essentially more consistent. I hear alot of people talk about how “flat” the .270 shoots, but how about consistency?

I mainly hunt right now, but have been going more and more to the range (100-300 yd). I want to get into the range scene more. I would love to shoot a 1000yd match but I do not think my .270 will be accurate enough. When I talked to others they all seem to use .223, .308, or .338. Is this because the .270 is not consistent enough at longer distances? Or is it because the heavier bullet weight helps with wind drift?

Also on a side note I would like to ask if maybe the consistency of my loads can be attributed to the rifle itself. I understand that changing the trigger and stock will effect accuracy, but will it help enough to make the .270 able to be more consistent, shrink groups, and reach out to be able not to be embarrassed at a long match?

Thanks so much for any input, also I apologize if I placed this in the wrong forum.

Re: New reloader, caliber questions

Get this book "Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting - By: Bryan Litz

Very good read and might lead you to the long range gun you been looking for.

270 is a great hunting round! However, very few mfg's make bullets that will fly very well at 600yds plus. JMHO!

The 308 is a great platform and is still one of my favorites!

When it comes down to it! Yes, heaveier bullets buck the wind better.

Make sure that the gun your looking to get has a barrel twist rate that will shoot what you intend to put down it.

Re: New reloader, caliber questions

Everybody needs a 308, so buy one, and save up for glass, plan on spending twice the price on glass as the weapon.

What kind of accuracy are you getting with your 270, 5/8 moa would be a good shooting factory gun, 1/2 moa would be a great factory stick.

Re: New reloader, caliber questions

I get about MOA with this gun on bags, that is with alot of work. Can the weather greatly effect the way my loads work? Sometimes it seems like if it is 10-15 degrees colder the bullets that were good perform worse. I have been shooting off bags, but want to get a better rest. The rifle is a Wally world rem 270 SPS. This is the lowest model remington 700. Not bedded, or free float. the rifle I am looking into is a Rem 700p. 26 barrel 1:10 twist HS Stock aluminum bed with free float.

IDK if you guys shoot 1000 but does anyone bother with a 27 for that distance?

Re: New reloader, caliber questions

Robert,

The .270 bullet selection is very limited when it comes to High Ballistic coefficient rounds relative to those available for 6mm, 6.5mm and .7.62 (30 cal). High B.C. is what you want to shoot at very long range.

I love my Stainless M77 in .270 Win.
