Turners Outdoorsman has new .308 Rem 700 SPS Heavy BBl (.820) Varmint rifles on sale for $494. I think I will buy one after work today. This will be my entry into long range shooting. I have done a search on this forum, and there are no used rifles for sale as of last night. I have determined that with the mods I want to do, this will be better for me than a Savage.

I thought I'd run this past the SH collective before I buy...

That is a good price, i dont know about other states but thos go for $600-650 plus tax new, over here.

Yeah go for it. Great deal. I got mine for 550ish about 10 months ago. Save a couple hundred for a HS precision stock and youre good to go. Were talking .5 moa.

Thanks for the positive comments.

I bought the Rem 700 SPS today. Some of the more immediate choices I have to make are scope, base, and rings. I have a 5.5x22x56 Nightforce on my M1a which I love, but it's heavy. I might go for a Vortex-Viper-PST for the SPS, or maybe swap the Nightforce over to the SPS and put a Vortex on the M1a, in an effort to lighten the M1a.

I have to research base and rings. I like Badger Ordnance rings, but not sure what base, suggestions are appreciated. 20moa on the base seems to be pretty common choice.

I want to shoot the SPS for a month or two before I start changing things, but I will want to get a extended bolt handle fairly soon, then on to a detachable box magazine mod, which means a new stock at the same time.

I like the looks of the Accuracy Intl. I know that HS, McMillan,and B&C are name brands but don't know the products, so again advice would be appreciated.

Just ordered a B&C a5 with Wyatts drop mags from stockys for the same rifle I'll let you know how they are when it gets here. Also if you look on gunbroker you can find stocks that you can actually buy that aren't backordered.

Great choice for the A5 I put the A2 on and once I started shooting more prone I really wish I had gone with the A5. If you have the barrel lapped and bed the stock you will be amazed what that gun is capable of doing

Great choice on the SPS-V purchase. Manners stocks is another good choice with there new molded in camo. As far as rail and rings go badger Ordnance or seekins precision.
