I need some advice… I've been wantin to get into the shooting game for a while (long range) I just wanted someone’s opinion on a good starting out rifle. I'm goin away to college and money is pretty tight so I was thinking about goin with a Mosin Nagant. There cheap and I here they shoot strait. Or on the other hand should I save up for a Remington 700? I'm really not sure. Thought I would ask some people that knew

Re: New Rifle for the New Guy

I own a couple Mosins, not a great choice for a long range gun, but they can get the job done, not well I might add, but they can do it. I have often times thought about taking one and having a chamber cut for the 7.62x54R with a standard .308 bore barrel as the round is very similiar ballistically speaking to the revered 308 winchester. But if you don't want to spend the money to have the work done, I would suggest a 700 SPS tactical, the 308 with the short barrel and Hogue stock, or a Howa 1500 Varmint gun action in the hogue stock, just my $.02.

Re: New Rifle for the New Guy

I had a Remington 700 Varmint rifle that I adored. But it was too much weapon for me and so I transferred it and bought a Remington 700 LTR. I've yet to bond with it. But not to discredit the quality of that weapon, the fact is my first rifle was mighty fine. It was a limited edition for that year, with a titanium bolt that was like butta...

Buddy, focus on college and not having a weapon you're barely gonna get to shoot. Save your money, get some training and rent a school rifle. When you decide the commitment and purpose of your shooting (hunting or competition) then buy your rifle based on your more advanced knowledge vs. pricing.
