new rifle idea for a newbie

So before I go out and search for a rifle to start being made want to have a full list of specifics and make sure it's a good idea and/or possible. The rifle will be dual-purpose for hunting/long range target so light and accurate. Based loosley off of the rem700/m24/m40 variants and will fire 7.62 NATO. The idea is to take the m24/m40 and work on some of the issues I don't like and make it more accurate.

Short action
24" fluted barrel SS with black coating
low profile detachable magazine
Triggers I am iffy about, I would like to have a two-stage though at about 3.5-4.5 lbs.
Edit- Another thing I thought about was reducing the throw of the bolt from 90 to 60 not sure if its possible.
Bolt- I thought about fluting this also but I don't see a reason, the weight loss would be minimal and wouldn't decrease heat by all that much since it isn't a high temp area of the gun like the bbl.

Any suggestions are welcome I am just trying to make this a nice rifle, I know some people will say "just go buy X from X company" Thats not exactly what I'm looking for. I like to have a weapon -I- feel I had a hand in making.

XCR LR tactical 308 with an HS DMB conversion for that "low Profile" mag look.


If you want 2 stage trigger then go for a gas gun,

have a m1a and use a m14, i'm just used to a 2 stage trigger is all.

but i'll keep the magazine tip handy and write it up

Not sure what your budget is for the rifle. But Badger makes an action with a 60 degree bolt throw. Huber Concepts makes a two stage trigger. You may want to talk to Mike at Underground Skunkworks as I believe he may be soon offering the rifle I had built which would give you two of the things your looking for. He is Skunkworks here on the hide.

Since weight is a concern because of it's intended use as a hunting rifle, I'd scrap the idea of a 24" barrel and go with 18"-20". You'll cut maybe 1# and not lose much "range" with your chosen cartridge.

seta8967 I missed the part of using it for hunting. I will let you know that the set up I have maybe a little on the heavy side for you then. As I believe the way it currently sits is like 16 LBS.

lol i carry a m14 mod 0 that weighs in at 18 lbs. I can take weight I just don't want to be in the 20+ lbs category
