New rifle

What a find. I won a bid on a new Rem 700 SPS Tactical in 308 for $368. It came on Thursday, I mounted a Mk 4 4.5-14x50 LRT M1 TMR in TPS rings on a Farrel 20 MOA base; 10 lbs even or at least 10 on my bathroom scales.

After 20 break-in rounds accompanied by a judicious Hoppes #9 and Barnes copper cleaning between rounds 1-5 and every 5 after it was ready to go.

I then took some once fire FC brass I had laying around for such an occasion and loaded up 4 round snacks of Varget going 42-46 gr in .5 gr increments fired by F210M primers. Bullets used were 168 and 175 SMK and Berger 168 VLD's (max of 45 gr). Simply neck sized via Lee Collet neck die. Beautiful Utah day yesterday with a slight 3 mph wind in my face.

168 SMK

168 Berger VLD

My CED won't give SD's for 4 or less shots.

168 SMK FGMM=two 5-shot groups
2505 AV for 10 shots, 34 ES/12 SD/.425" and .7"

175 SMK FGMM=two 5-shot groups
2519 AV for 10 shots, 42 ES/10.5 SD/1.13" and 1.16"

So, willl either of the 168's get me to 1000 with the 1:12 twist. I live at 4500' elev where the baro rarely get above 25.5

Or, will the 175 SMK be needed for 1000?

Also, before I did anything to the rifle, I tore into it and the X-Mark trigger pulls at 3lbs. I'll leave it alone for now. I don't mind the Hogue rubber stock. It's free floated all the way to the receiver but I noticed during the shooting and range cleaning that the barrel sits very close to the left edge of the barrel channel. Also, when I'm moving the rifle around to it's final shooting posiiton I can see the barrel moving within the barrel channel. Actually, I should say the "rubber" stock was moving "around" the steel barrel. I was shooting off the Harris 6-9" BR-SM bipod with a rear bag. The more I shot this thing the more I learned how to hold it to get it to perform for me.

Even if this rifle had turned out to be a dud, I'd still have an inexpensive and new 700 action for a project gun but I think I'll keep it.

Re: New rifle

Excellent post, lot's of good info and I applaud your efforts. That's really the way to find out what works in your rifle.By chance have you tried 155gr smk's or scenars? Curious as to how they'd work for you, they seem to be outstanding in my stick....
And you do know you stole that rifle? We'd luv to see pics....

Re: New rifle

I'll take and post some pics tomorrow. Ordered a 500 ct box of 175 MK's today. 'Bout have enough money saved to order a NF 5.5-22 x 50 or 56mm w/ zerostop and either MOA/MOA or Mil/Mil. Still trying to decide. I'd say this is one of those times where the scope definately is more expensive than the rifle.

Re: New rifle

As promised, a picture. Sorry, it's not much. Oh, and my best friends told me just the other day, they bought a Kreiger 6.5mm barrel for me so I guess this rifles life as a 308 Win is short lived. Now to start looking for components to obtain for a custom job.

By the way, whats an average cost of an action job and then a barrel chambering, threading, crowing, and mounting?
