I have picked up brand new Savage 10 FP-SR for small build. I have B&C A2 Medalist Stock on the way as well as some other misc stuff.

I was very presently surprised yesterday when I ran some measurements with my Hornady OAL gauge.

Rifle has a pretty tight chamber and short throat. Loading close to the lands will not be a problem any longer. My 700LTR has .156 jump to the lands with 168gr SMK loaded to 2.800 OAL.

Here is a few measurements of chambered round with bullet touching the lands.
First number is base to the ogive of the bullet measured with Multitoyo and Hornady Bullet comparator.
Second number is OAL from base to the tip of the bullet.

2.196 - 2.802 - 168gr Hornady Match HPBT
2.233 - 2.811 - 168gr Sierra MatchKing HPBT
2.192 - 2.825 - 168gr Hornady A-Max
2.190 - 2.816 - 178gr Hornady A-Max
2.151 - 2.810 - 168gr Barns Tipped TSX Copper
2.191 - 2.810 - 165gr Hornady GMX Copper

So yeah, I am a happy camper =)

My Savage 10 is the same way.

COAL touching the lands with 2 popular bullets:
175 SMK - 2.793"
168 Amax - 2.815"

Watch your pressures with that short throat. Believe it or not, my pet load, at 42.2 grains of IMR4064 under a 178 Amax, is slightly compressed. If I go up to the next accuracy node of about 43.6 grains, then my brass is toast in short order!

Yes, loading bullets close or at the lands is not an issue...
