New rifle arroved today, it's a Savage 12 FVSS in 308. I need some suggestions in the mod department. I'm thinking a detachable mag setup (CDI unit), I plan on fluting the barrel, threading 5/8 24 and possibly shortening it a bit in my shop, it's twenty-six inches now. I can't afford a nice new match barrel so I use this one up before dropping some more $. How much do you think the rifle will suffer with the shorter barrel. I plan on making this into a 1000 yard hitter. Stock choices in the price range are the Bell & Carlson. Give me some advice..
Thanks

most savage rifles shoot really well from the factory its just needs the right load
i would put it in a B&C tactical stock get CDI bottom metal, then put a good base, set of rings and some good glass like the vortex viper

Re: New Savage arrived today, what mods to go with?

No it's not the Accustock, I figured that I be changing it out and just went with the basic composite (plastic) stock, no need to waste money on something I be swapping out. I can tell you that this stock is very cheap. I believe that I'm going to start a thread on this build.

Re: New Savage arrived today, what mods to go with?

From one savage 12 owner to another, congrats first off, I love mine. On that note though, ditch the stock and trigger first off if you can afford to. Shoot it before changing the barrel you might be suprised how well it shoots.

Re: New Savage arrived today, what mods to go with?

I haven't shot it yet, nor have I had any experience with the accu trigger, but it feels nice and is adjustable. I don't think it's bad, I will know more after shooting it this weekend.

Re: New Savage arrived today, what mods to go with?

no brys, i meant ubet. i hear of people replacing the accutrigger, removing the center blade, stuff like that. just curious why?

Re: New Savage arrived today, what mods to go with?

You can shorten the bbl, but not flute it very deep...it's a button rifled barrel and needs to maintain some diameter to keep the bore stable.

The Accutrigger is fine, just adjust it.

As long as you tighten the action screws so they don't torque the action unevenly, and make sure the barrel has enough cleanance in the channel, the rifle should shoot well.

You can beef up that stock a bit and bed it. It's a lot of work if you take extra care to get the epoxy to stick... or look at the BC Duramaxx stock for $100. It's not the best BC makes but is a step above the factory unit.

Bed it feel the forend with some epoxy for stifness, and feel the ass end full of expanding foam and something for a little weight to balance it. They work ok like that till you get a better stock.
I've got one set up like that with a Bartlien and it shoots in the .150 range. Of course it is a top notch barrel.

Re: New Savage arrived today, what mods to go with?

I'm going to load tonight and shoot in the morning, I put my Millett scope on and tighten the action screws as they were hand tight, but I didn't get carried away with to much torque. We will see tomorrow how she does, I'll post my results.

All I can say is WOW! I'm use to shooting ARs and this is truly Bad ASS, I was putting holes in my plate targets at 375 yards no problem, I was shooting Sierra 175 BTHP match with 43 gr of Varget, next time I go for some 100 yard groups.

I love my B&C Medalist Tactical, for the price they just as good as H&S if not better. May want to check/tighten the headspace if possible. Some, are just a little bit roomy.

Re: New Savage arrived today, what mods to go with?

I got my headspace gage and tighten it a little and you are correct on the looseness, she's good to go now. I've posted some of the finished pictures on my other post, i'll put some here to.

Still playing around with loads and seating depths.

The number on the target is seating depth. It's seems that 2.812 to 2.814 were the magic numbers. I know that there is still some work to do, but I'm very pleased with the results so far.

Great looking rifle, and it shoots to boot!

I like seeing Savage builds, they are happening more and more. For your intended purpose, did you find you had a hard time finding parts, or options for what you wanted to upgrade? I just find the argument some people make against Savages that there aren't enough aftermarket support, questionable...

Re: New Savage arrived today, what mods to go with?

I haven't owned a bolt rifle or for that matter any Savage rifle ever, I always had ARs and pistols. I love ARs but one day I went to the range and saw a couple of bench rest shooters shooting Savage rifles. I asked one of them why not a Rem 700 instead? He told me that he liked the fact that he could change out the barrels and bolt head in less then ten minutes. I was like that's cool, not knowing anything about the gun, I then asked him about accuracy. The range went cold and we walked out to the targets at 100 yards, he was holding a .250 group in 4 out of 5 targets, I was sold at that point.
I then started my research on what I wanted to build, I knew I wanted the Accutrigger, didn't care about the Accustock and I wanted stainless heavy barrel. I found the 12 FVSS in 308 was my choice. It doesn't have a removable mag, so I had to find out if I could adapt a mag stock over. The Bell and Carlson stock fit the bill, I bought the stock from Stocky's Stocks and the price was perfect. I email CDI about the bottom metal, I received it in 3 days. I started putting this together and the fit of the stock was perfect and the bottom metal snapped in place nice and tight. I like the B & C stock, it has an Alum Bedding block and a very nice finish. Finally I topped it off with a Ken Farrell 20 MOA scope base, it gives me about 50 MOA of up adjustment above my 100 yard zero. I have to say I wish I had got a bolt rifle years ago.

Re: New Savage arrived today, what mods to go with?

i bought a stevens 200 in .308 a few years back which is a no frills savage 110 action and reg tapered barrel. shot .75" at 100.

dropped atrigger in it went to .5" at 100 stays moa out to 550.

was going to do the replacemnat stock, and other stuff, but chose to keep it as it is (mechanically). not bad for a $325.00 rifle. my next rifle was a savage, and i imagine my next one will be also. getting performance out of them that surpasses rifles twice the price.

congrats on your savage, great looking and shooting rifle. you made a good choice.
