Kid came in the local BS spot wanting to sell a pre-accutriger Savage in 7mm mag. I was the winner with my bid of $200. I got a 3-9 Bushnell Banner in the mix too

Now WTF am I gonna do with this thing? Is it possible to use this action and build it into a non mag rifle. I'm thinking 260 or 6.5 creedmore. This would be a hunting gun.

I know I'll need a stock too, the factory one is walnut with a blind mag and no trapdoor.

Re: New savage project

Its a simple matter of changing out the bolt head to accomodate the smaller cartridge face. There are lots of stocks available for it in either DBM or floor plate arrangements. Savageshooters.com has a lot of Savage retailers linked there.

Re: New savage project

It's a long action so your stocks choices aren't going to be as extensive. But HS precision, Stockade, and I believe McMillan are all options.

If you go non-magnium with the bolt face if I was you I'd consider the 280AI, and 284 using the 180gr bergers. Either one of those two doesn't use a huge amount of powder but still gives borderline mag performance. They would also work better with your long action magazine.

Good luck,
Merritt
