I'm getting a new bolt gun in the near future and looking into the scope and rings to match. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a Remington 700 (most likely LTR or SPS), definitely in 308 Winchester. I'd like to get either Badger base and rings or LaRue base and rings. I've always been a huge fan of Larue, and their customer service is second to none. But are their bolt gun bases and rings on par quality-wise with Badger?

Here are a few more questions; I'm pretty much set on getting a Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x32. The maximum distance I ever plan on shooting at is 800m, and realistically much closer. For a 600-800 meter shot is the 20MOA base necessary? How about the "zero stop" turrets? If I can get by without these two things I'd prefer to.

As for my uses, this rifle will be for fun range/ plinking, and possibly hunting/ hiking uses down the road. I'm not looking to get a long range competition set-up. That is why I'm thinking along the lines of a short/ light rifle with a 2.5-10x32 scope.

I appreciate any help. This site is full of great information. But it can also be overwelming for someone new to long distance shooting.

Thanks,
Doug

Re: New scope and mount questions

zero stop just allows you to dial without "losing" were your zero is. I am not sure of the NF's dial range but you should be able to get out to 800 without a 20moa base.

Re: New scope and mount questions

I have an LTR with the 2.5-10X32 mounted on it. Recently, I switched the mount over to a Seekins 20MOA base and low rings. They fit great and are more streamlined than other offerings. Since the 2.5-10x32 has 100MOA of total travel (50 MOA usable) a flat base would be fine because a shot out to 800 will be under 30MOA. (I'm basing this on a 165 gr. round traveling with a MV of 2650 fps and G7 BC of .228). However, I might move this base to another rifle and want the 20 MOA. It doesn't hurt having it.

I would definitely get zero-stop. The compact NXS turrets do not give you any indication that you've dialed more than one turn.

Re: New scope and mount questions

Thanks for the great replies Gentlemen. So far 3/3 are recommending the zero stop. That's good enough for me.

I'm leaning towards the non-20MOA base since it sounds like I can get by without it.
