new tikka 223 with 10" twist

Hello, and Welcome to the sight. To start off, check the "load data" threads. A lot of the guys offer up their pet loads. You can use them as a guide, as you work up loads in your gun. Heavy? As in bullet, or powder? If you're lucky, some of the guys that really know some thing will chime in, on the use of certain weight bullets in your 1/10 twist Tikka, or read the "loads thread" carefully. Most guys post the twist they're using, to get their results. I, d suggest you do what I did, when I found this site. I spent a lot of hours, going way back into the threads, combing for info, and advice that was already posted. You'll come to recognize Who really knows their stuff. AND, if you ever get flamed: try not to take it too seriously. Every body has a bad day, once in a while, and some guy's are just natural born. I'm just getting back into .223, because I'm in a cheap phase, and like stretching a pound of powder, and I'm tired off searching empty racks, for it.

Your twist AND RIFLE will determine how heavy you can go. You may get lucky and be able to get up to 65 or 69 but I'd say you will probably be limited to closer to the 60gr bullets. Every rifle is different so you may have one that is generous in liking something not standard for its twist rate.

I have 700's with the standard varmint twist of 1/12 and the P in 1/9. The heaviest the 12 likes to go is 60gr NBT's with a good dose of Varget. However, the 1/9 I can shoot up to 69's with ease and I've done some experimenting with 75's as well.

Here's a great article from 6mmbr.com that explains things quite well with a variety of things to keep in mind:

In ref to 918v's tag line above...the Glock is RARELY the bitch. Why?? you may ask because its out doing what a gun should do....being carried and ready for the fight instead of sitting in the safe like a lil priss. ;) Sorry couldn't resist.
