Purchased a new in box Tikka varmint 22-250 in January and went out to sight it in today for the first time. I am using Winchester ballistic silver tip in 50 grain. The rifle will not group and there are a few problems that are visible on the spent cases. First is the heavy powder residue on the neck of the case. You can see that the case has elongated and rounded over at two points 180 degrees apart. Second is the case looks expanded 1/4" from the base. Last there are the smiles of the happy face on the base. I have never seen any of these signs on any spent cases before. I would like to know what more experienced shoots think about these signs. I did not have access to a different brand of ammo at this time. I tried to attach a picture but it was too large. Thank you for you assistance.

Mine in 7mm mag does the same thing? Not sure but I get that fish lips on the neck of brass? Don't see it as a problem? As for it not grouping try another load, recheck bases, rings, scope! If you are using the tikka rings " that's your problem"!,, (junk) I mounted torqued my buddy's scope on his tikka? Rings would loosen and scope moved. Did it twice!! Got new bases and rings, back to tack driving tikka with rem cor locks.
Those signs on the cases may just be due to the nickel cases. I've never used them in a rifle but in pistols i know they split easy after 2 fires or so. I wouldn't base the rifles accuracy off of one factory load. I've had several custom rifles that shoot 1/4" with my loads and 1.5-2" with some factory loads. Especially hunting loads.

I am using Tikka rings and bases. I have them torqued and loc-tited, they were not loose. I looked into the chamber and it looks like the chamber has a crack along the east side ( see picture ). I have cleaned the chamber and the line that appears to be a crack does not go away. I find it hard to believe that the chamber cracked from factory loads. I am going to take the rifle into a gunsmith to verify weather or not the chamber does have a crack to be on the safe side. If the chamber is good then I will try new factory loads to start, any suggestions on known good factory loads for this caliber and make? If I still have grouping issues then I will try new rings and bases. If nothing works then I will repost for more recommendations. Thank you very much for your advice, it is greatly appreciated.
Looks like you just have crap in the chamber. Cosmoline or cleaning solvent. What do the fired cases measure at the neck before and after?
New Winchester ballistic silvertip 50grain measures .2524" diameter at the neck with a micrometer. Spent case measures .2557" at the neck and is even around the whole circumference. I will try some solvent this evening to verify that the "crack" is not just debris. Thanks again.
