My sister is interested in rifles after I took her out and briefly taught her how to use my rifle. She had fun and now wants to get more into it.

I was thinking of getting her a .223, something that has less of a kick then my .308 that she tried out. What do you folks think, what brand and even what caliber should I invest for someone that is learning to handle a rifle as well as enjoy shooting at the max 500 yards, most likely 100-300.

223 is great for those distances and also cheap to shoot and even reload for. If ya add a brake it'll seem like a 22LR to her. A decent scope and a couple sand bags and she'll be all set.

I personally am a fan of Savage since they are easy to work on and are reasonably priced.

yea i agree with topstrap. i have a savage 10fp in 223 and it shoots great and still have the factory stock i just added a palm swell to it with some bondo i had and paint it. another one would be the remington 700 sps varmint of the tactical. depends how much u are trying to spend. if thats your max range a millet trs or a ss 16x would suit that gun and her just fine. i will say that the accutrigger is better than the remington trigger

Not sure on the Savage's or Rem's but I think you can get the Tikka with a 8 twist so see could run the heavier bullets and get a little better buck on the wind.
