Hello, names Jonathan Paris, jonny P for short. any who im new to the forum, but ive been shooting for 10 years, all those years i had a .22 rifle, (Ruger model 10/22) needless to say im shopping around, fired a few .223's but it doesn't do it for me, i kinda want something a little heavier, so i was looking at some Remington 770 .308,and a 30-06. and then some. preferably i want a Accuracy International 308 or 338 but im not that ambitious, and cant afford it. plus im into customizing (been doing that to cars for 4 years) so im thinking this, get a Remington 770/700 getting an accuracy international chassis for it, mainly because i love the styling of it and the grip, i find a built in cheek rest and thumb hole very confortable (anyone know where to get one and for how much?) bi pod, 20-25x scope (researching) and eventually a suppressor.

any suggestions? im in Binghamton any dealers where i can get a rifle near by? so far all i know of is gander mountain and dicks sporting goods....found 2 remington 770's for $449, bolt action, clip fed.

Re: New to forum, not to shooting

Welcome to the Hide Johnny P. A 308 is a good way to start. Certainly, establishing a budget for your first precision stick is important. It will give you options for the best bang for your bucks, so to speak. Having said that, in my opinion, AIAW is a great rifle to start out. (I have two). However, custom built is certainly another option also. If you look at prices, AIAE is comparable to a decent built. Of course, the AIAW will cost more. There is nothing wrong with getting a Remy 700 and drop it in an AICS stock and you are GTG. In fact, a good friend of mine has the same exact set up. He didn't want to spend the kind of money for the AIAW. I told him to get a Remy 700 XCR in 308 and drop it in an 2.0 AICS. A good Leupy and bipod later, he is banging steel at 1000 yards without much trouble. BTW, he is using factory ammo too, (FGMM 175).

So, having said all of that, doing a bit of research on the various options will give you the best bang for the bucks. Also, don't forget the for sale section in this site. You can get some seriously good deal on a custom stick.

Welcome aboard!

I'd suggest getting an 06 instead of a 308. You can shoot them side by side out to 1000y and once you're ready to go further than that the 06 will easily get you to 1500, maybe further depending on the elevation you're shooting.

If you're not reloading already you should start doing that. There's plenty of people on here who will help you out. FGMM 30-06 is harder to find than 308, but they're still both about $2 per round. It doesn't take long before that reloading equipment pays for itself.

Stay away from the 770 and get the 700 or don't be afraid to look at a Savage. My savage is a sweet shooter, much better than I can drive it at any appreciable distances.
