I need help with neck turning.

Do I need to put the expander mandrel in a die? What type of die?

I was looking at the PMA neck turner. Can I neck turn by hand with this tool?

Get the drill driver case holder. I've never tried to turn by hand and I really don't want to, even if I "could".

Don't waste your money on carbide anything. The parts will outlive you.

This is great for the benchrest (and maybe F Class guys)....but the first time you have a controlled round feed action spin the case out of your action and dent the neck on the side of the gun you'll be done.

I actually have a neck turning tool that I bought this spring specifically for a used barrel that I bought....I turned 5 cases and decided my time is too valuable for that (for my type of shooting).

My necks get dented all the time, why would that have an impact on the benefits of neck turning?

Turned necks are thinner, hence weaker and more prone to more severe denting/permanent damage. The "Anti" turning guys comments above aren't wrong, it just depends on what and how you are shooting.

Taking your .013 necks down to .011 or .012 won’t make them weak enough to matter. Tight neck reamers aren’t the reason you turn. Turning is the reason you get tight neck reamers. If you’re turning *because* you have a tight neck, you made a poor reamer choice.

You’ll see a reduction in sd/es. Whether it will be enough for you to make it worthwhile is a personal decision.

90% of stuff you hear about neck turning from PRS shooters is derived from a lack of understanding. Except that it may not increase your performance enough to matter on the standard size targets we typically shoot.

That's one of the great things about America, we still get to choose (some things). I'm not in the anti-neck turn crowd, but I just can't see the benefit in taking time to clean up a case and make it pretty only to fling it into the grass/dirt/sand/rocks during a sitting or prone rapid fire string. Maybe one of the other competitors steps on it, UGH. For me and my shooting there is a lot more to be gained from me spending time behind the rifle (live or dry firing) than there is to be gained by neck turning cases. For other people with different skill levels in more demanding disciplines, I fully understand why you would neck turn.

Good luck whatever you choose @Gil P.

Here's how you decide if you need to neck turn or not to neck turn

1. Do you compete in benchrest or precision thousand-yard competition... Banging steel doesn't count? Neck turning is a maybe if yes.

2. With your history of competition do you regularly place on the podium or within a few thousands of placing on podium? If you answer yes to this neck turning might help you.

3. If your neck turning, do you neck size? Kind of a trick question if your neck sizing you really don't need to be turning... Have your Barrel set up so all you have to do is worry about spring back.

Are you regularly shooting at a mile Four score?... Just bringing steel doesn't count... yes to score maybe neck turning will help.

If all you're doing is banging steel just going out and having fun just doing your standard PRS competition neck turning isn't going to help dick.

What will help... Investing in a Hands-On one on one coaching. I don't care how good you are somewhere your fuking up and need Improvement

Unturned necks aren't holding me back, that's for sure.

Looks like I need to re evaluate some things, and spend some dough on a good class before neck turning.

Simply running an expander mandrel will do more for you than neck turning. I'd recommend either a Sinclair or 21st. I have a Sinclair and a K&M mandrel dies. The K&M sets a really light neck tension, around .0005-.001 which unless you are soft seating or transporting your ammo in angel hair you're not going to want the K&M. The Sinclair runs around .0015-.002 neck tension. But getting your neck tension and neck ID consistent is more influential than neck turning IMO.
