Greetings,
I am new to the rifle game, and I am trying to clarify some things for myself, though I will be generally asking for opinion based answers it definitely helps to have a place to start.
I have been doing a good bit of research on my own and have developed a list of questions I would like opinions on, and since the questions will range from general newbieness to powder and bullet choices for hand loads I am making this in a general forum in a single post for simplicity sake. Any answers are appreciated on any part of the post and I appreciate your time and expertise on these matters.
I have purchased a Remington 700 5R Mil spec Stainless in .308 as an entry level rifle that can grow with me a bit as I learn and improve myself.
Scope
I simply want to clarify, since I believe that the shop just threw my scope on turned some knobs and said it was bore sighted for 100, I re centered that scopes windage adjustment, checked again with a boresighter, then adjusted the scope to be centered using the windage screws on the scope mount, thus enabling myself to have full range to the right or left when adjusting for windage on the field and having the scope reset to 0 on the windage dial to be re centered properly. The scope I have is a 1/8 MOA Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 and I do like the clarity and light quality I get through it even though it is a less expensive scope(~400ish range).
I am planning to replace my stock, I was planning to do so before I ever decided on a rifle to buy in the first place as I do have a 15" LOP. I have had difficulty finding a production rifle that had that available to me out of the box, not to mention the fact that I seriously prefer a thumbhole stock. I have seen a million opinions generally most settling on McMillan or Manners both of which seem to be fine stocks. I have not seen many reviews or opinions on the HS Precision line, I was looking at an A5 over at stockys which made me look at the HS precision site and see that there were more options available for that stock above what Stockys had available. I am really just trying get more opinion of HS precision n this case, as I am certain either Manners or McMillian would be great, but I can get a well featured piece from HS that actually adjusts to my LOP without shims for about the same price as one of the others. I really wish I could put hands on these myself but... Thoughts?
(HS I am looking at is H-S Precision Pro-Series M24 Thumbhole Tactical)
I would like to convert to a magazine and I have seen a few products that might fit the bill, but would like some testimony/naysaying from those that may have tried some of these products that convert from a trap door to a box mag. I realize some of these pricier stock/(AI)AICS systems out there do this for you, but they are far out of budget in general.
Bedding/accurizing? I am trying to get a better handle on exactly what these processes are specifically, especially before I spend on a new stock regardless of manuf.
I am looking into reloading, and would be new at that whenever I get around to it, but I have been doing research trying to see what a general consensus was on loads for the R5 and it seems that Black hills boat tail 168-175gr bullets match primers and Varget have been consistent performers in more than one situation. Granted every gun is different but like with all things, it is good to have a place to start. If you have an R5 and have had similar/differing results I am interested to know what your results have been. Reloading for me is probably a year end prospect budget wise, so I have plenty of time to gather information and I don't mind a good story about a particularly amazing visit to the range.
I appreciate any information/opinions, thanks again!
