Picking up first suppressor on monday. Thunderbeast. What do you guys do for loads? Just use same as unsuppressed? Some guys at the range have said they load different for suppressed rounds. What is your advice?

Re: New to suppressors

No doubt.

There are two types of rounds that you will come to work with in regard to your suppressor. The first are "normal" supersonic rounds that represent the vast majority of accuracy shooting. Those rounds are either store bought or reloaded. and depending on your rifle you may find that some manufacturers, bullets weights and velocities will provide superior accuracy than others. Some do quite well with store bought and never go about reloading, some do not and reload for their performance needs.

The other completely different type of ammo will be subsonic rounds. These are rounds that travel below the speed of sound and provide ultimate suppression. Why? Well, there are five sources of sound involved with shooting. The two main components are muzzle blast and the signature of your bullet in flight. Your new suppressor will effectively deal with the first, but not the second. In order to remove the supersonic crack of your bullet in flight, you will need to either purchase or, more likely, carefully reload rounds to supresonic velocities. Subsonic rounds are as quiet as it gets and by following good reloading practice you can safely build them up...or buy them store bought. Just know that it takes more than a spoonful to get subsonic rounds to stabilize. It depends on your barrel twist, length and a few more points. Search the threads here for much more information and ask away.

Good luck.

Thanks Zac. Wow that is excellent, and quite timely advice. Im shooting a 6.5 x 47 Lapua. Cant name the builder, but its a very reputable well known one for this round. Any load recommendations Zac? Its a 22 inch 1 in 8.5 twist stainless barrel. Currently using 41.5 gr of H4350 with 142 SMKs
