Hey just wanted to introduce myself. name is JD I am new to the board. I was on a sniper team with 10th mtn for 2 years and am currently deployed with the 101st. I am really wanting to get into competition shooting and learning how to reload when i return to the states. I currently have a Rem 700 R5 308 with a MK4 3.5x10 with a TMR reticle. Well just wanted to say hi.

Welcome to the board, and thank you for your service. The best bet to get into the competitions is simply to go out and try them. I'd recommend a few with out expensive entry fees or travel to start so you don't end up feeling smoked afterwards. Better to get an idea what to expect before you pony up a bunch of money.

that looks awesome AQ ill have to try for the one in 2012. Ill be around the DFW area on mid tour leave at the end of january/ beginning of February. There was this shooting range in Mingus texas that I was going to go out to. I hear they are a nightforce dealer too so maybe I can compare my glass to that to see about a possible upgrade. I know everyone has their opinions and "what is best" from the millions of threads that I read but for me it will come down to price and opprotunity. If I find a well priced nightforce F1 ill go with that or a USO. But if I find a very well priced premier or SB (used most likely) Ill defintely go that route.

We'll be glad to help wherever we can.
There's considerable support here for doing frequent practice, and doing it with a .22LR. Nothing expensive or sophisticated, just reliable and consistent. Same for ammo. Accuracy of 2MOA is adequate, and spending hugely to improve on that is probably not necessary. All we're trying to do is observe and confirm skills, and spot marksmanship trends.
There are many kinds of competitive shooting, and I suggest F Class. It employs supported positions and optical sights, and is more similar to tactical operation than High Power National Match course, which stresses slings, iron sights, and puts heavy dependence on rapid fire. Tactical Comp is about rippin' and runnin', stress and judgement. I'm not capable of the physical demands, so I don't do it; but I often wish I could.
With our vast membership. somebody's nearly always got an answer, and we usually get several; some simply demonstrating that many solutions can exist for common problems.
There's personalities involved so some responses can go astray. Please bear with us while we get our schtuff back together sometimes.
