New to the long range game

I'm new to the long range side of shooting. My furthest shot was 526 yards with an off the shelf model 700 bdl .270. Actually surprised myself with that one. I don't have the money to spend on the fancy setups so was wondering where to begin. I've been with people about different calibers and am kind of leaning towards a 6.5 creedmoor. My dad's friend (Dennis Demille)(who's also my friends uncle) swears by the 6.5. Have seen a savage in the 6.5 and was wondering if this is a good start and what kind of range can I expect to reach out to with this basic setup. Any help and advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: New to the long range game

6.5 creedmoor is an amazing caliber I have a semi auto chambered in it and am anxiously awaiting a custom bolt gun in it as well. Around sea level most of my hand loads should get me between 1300-1500 yards before going transonic.

The clambering does limit you in your options as far as ammo if you don't reload. You might want to try .308 which can easily get you to 1000 yards and there is a plethora of easily affordable ammo out there for it for ever possibly end purpose.

As far as savage they do make a great gun I have a 10fp in .308 from them that I quite like and they are quite affordable.

if your dad's friend is Dennis Demille, I would make sure to be his friend too, I don't think there many more accomplished shooters like him around. Show some interest and find a way to go shoot with him and ask tons of questions.
he is a really good guy too.
good luck.
