Hey guys, Kinna new to the Remington 700 rifles but I want one. I'm wanting to build one just to have my own "spin" on what I would want from an SWS.

1st off, it's not like I don't have metal working experience because I do. And if I have to do anything like headspacing, just trust the fact that I'm not retarded and will gladly pass that part off to a qualified gunsmith, so I know it's done right.

I like the idea of the M24, being able to change a few things out and go to .300 Win Mag. I understand this takes some kind of long action receiver (Right word?).

This is part of where the real question begins. Are ALL the factory receivers built to cycle cartridges like .300 WIn Mag? Or do they mill them to only cycle the cartridge that they will chamber it to fire when the rifle is built?

Re: New to the Rem 700

it all comes back to the barrel if the barrel is chambered to 308 it will not take a 300 win mag cartridge and vice versa
but the same action if it is a long action will take both providing you swap out the barrel and im not sure as to the bolt head may need a custom bolt that can take the bolt head off to swap that out too

so if you want to have both u need:
barrel chambered in .308
barrel chambered in .300 win mag
a custom bolt design (not sure ask around)
go no go gauge
barrel vise and tools to swap out barrels

i really do suggest you stay with one caliber the swap out thing looks good on paper but it becomes very trying for precision after a while

Re: New to the Rem 700

Have you ever fired a 300 Win Mag before? I have and I didn't care for having my teeth fillings knocked out.

.308 is the way I went and I have 0% regret. Barrel swaps aren't just plugin and go...

If you want to get started, find a Dick's Sporting Goods or Cabela's special on a R700 Varmint in .308.

I got a barreled action from one here on the Hide and added a McMillan stock and had it bedded:

I was popping empty 12ga shotguns shells with it at about 100 yards this past weekend using shit $15/box Federal and Remington Core-Lokt ammo for fun.

Plan to take her deer hunting here in the next two weeks!

I have fired both the .30-06 cartridges and the 7.62x54r cartridges as well. In fact, I own a Mosin Nagant 91/30

Have not fired .300 Win Mag. However, I have fired a lot of other rounds as well, .303 British, 8mm Mauser, 7.5x54

I would not be prone to changing them out very often. I would more likely be shooting more .308 than .300 Win Mag (I'm pretty sure for .300 the price will be higher).

I think I would need a different bolt for each though. The .308 is a shorter casing with a smaller rim diameter so I would likely need a long action .308 bolt as well as a .300 Win Mag Bolt.

Definitely would need the go/no go gauges.
