hey, I'm new to long range shooting, I'm not new to shooting I just haven't tried any scoped bolt action rifles. I mostly have experience with pistols and military rifles (m1 garand, Mauser K98, ar-15, etc.). This rifle will be for target shooting (maybe some hunting but I haven't decided).

Anyway I did some research and I just ordered a Remington 700 5R mil-spec 24" .308 win. and these accessories:
- Badger Ordnance 1-Piece Maximized Picatinny-Style 20 MOA Elevated Scope Base Remington 700 Short Action
- Badger Ordnance Picatinny-Style 30mm Maximized Rings Matte Medium
- Wheeler Engineering Scope Ring Alignment Tool 30mm
- Wheeler Engineering FAT (Firearm Accurizing Torque) Torque Wrench Screwdriver
- Wheeler Engineering Level-Level-Level Scope Crosshair Leveling Tool
- Harris S-LM Bipod Leg Notch Sling Swivel Stud Mount 9" to 13" Black
- Williams one piece steel floor plate and trigger guard
- Schwiebert Precision Ballisticard (federal match 186 gr and 175 gr)
- Leupold Mark 4 Long Range Tactical M1 Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 4.5-14x 50mm Side Focus Illuminated Mil-Dot Reticle Matte
- killFlash ARD (Anti-Reflection Device) Leupold 50mm Objective
- butler creek scope covers
- Bushnell Legend 1200 ARC Laser Rangefinder 6x Black

Is this a good starting set up, did I miss anything that I would need?
Are those rings and base the right size for the scope?
Is there a good tutorial around on how to set everything up, or should I have a gunsmith mount the scope and set it up?

Thank you for any help.
Anthony.

Re: new to this...is this a good set up.

if you have someone else do it for you then you will never learn how....thats just my point of view

people here are great and tons of help but im so new i dont feel even remotely qualified to answer anything :p

yeah that's what I was thinking. I would rather learn how to do it so I would know how for the next time. I just got worried because I was reading on a website that you have to make sure the base sits right and some times you have to put bedding under it or you will damage the scope, and that sounds complicated. But that might have just been with cheaper scope bases?

Re: new to this...is this a good set up.

You are well on your way.

The only changes I would make arre the ring allignment tool and levels. Make sure you bed the base and use feeler guages to level the scope.

The biggest thing you need to add is ammo...lots of it!

Re: new to this...is this a good set up.

You're on the right road. Maybe overkill on the scope Aligning tools but if you don't know how to do it, maybe the tools are best.
As far as the scope, I like leupold but they have so many damn scopes with MOA turrets and mil dot reticles. If you're ranging with the scope, it's a pain in the ass to get use to doing the calculations. I don't keep up with which of their scopes have Mil turrets and which have MOA turrets so if you have one that is the 1/4 MOA turrets with Mil dot reticle, you need to learn how to convert one to the other or you will have a hard time with your dope calculations. Don't take that as a knock on your scope as it's not meant to be. It's a very fine scope, I just prefer MOA/MOA or Mil/Mil to make it easier.
All of your purchases are good stuff and should serve you very well. Good luck with your new project. It's gonna get expensive.

Get the Harris BRM-S 6-9 instead of the 9-11. Also, as opposed to the Sweichbert card, get the FDAC (not sure of the company name but someone will come along and remember it). The williams floorplate is a nice unit, but I wouldn't change the bottom metal system out unless you were going to a detachable magazine system.

By feeler gauges do you mean like the ones I have for automotive work? How would you use them just put them in between the base and scope? How hard is it to bed the base, is it always necessary to bed the scope base?

Re: new to this...is this a good set up.

Yes thats how you do the feeler gauges, and the ones from Auto Zone are fine. Not any need to bed the base unless the action is that out of whack

Re: new to this...is this a good set up.

Don't worry about bedding the scope base. You have a quality rifle and quality base and rings. No issues 99.9% sure of it. Put it together and go shoot it.
If you are getting into reloading, search search search before buying if you have a budget. Brownells, Natchez, Midway USA, Sinclair and many others run specials all the time on equipment. Craigslist even has equipment from time to time. Bass pro and Cabelas have some stuff. Compare prices and shipping options. Buying reloading components that require a haz-mat fee to ship (powder and primers) are often cheaper locally. Just spend time reading.

Re: new to this...is this a good set up.

You may not have to bed the base, if you do, it is an action thing, not a base thing.

When you get it, tighten the front screw and check for a gap under the back of the base. Then loosen the front one and repeat with the back screw. If you have a gap under either side, you need to bed it. Otherwise, you could bend the base slightly and through your rings out of allignment.

Use the search function in my sig and find threads on how to do it.

Re: new to this...is this a good set up.

You don't need the Williams bottom metal and you don't need the ARD. Put the money into some good ammo or start saving for reloading equipment as others have suggested.

Re: new to this...is this a good set up.

Thanks guys for your replies...yeah I think I do have to start reloading eventually...I just have to find room for all the equipment for now I will use good match ammo. I will take pics when it's done.

I saw one of you said to go with the 6-9" bipod, would that be the better choice for prone shooting. The only reason I picked the 9-13" is bc the 6-9 said it was for bench rest shooting.

Also are the rings and base I got the right size for the scope?

Re: new to this...is this a good set up.

Like the others said you don't need all those scope alignment doodads, just a feeler gauge. I would recommend the Borka torque wrench set as well, several vendors on the site stock them. Here is a link to an ended group buy for them posted by the maker but he lists several of the site vendors that carry them at the top:

I personally would go with a different scope, if you are going to spend that much I would go with either a slightly cheaper scope that is better for the money or slightly more expensive to get another step up. Several of the cheaper options include Vortex PST scopes, Weaver Tactical 3-15x50 EMDR, Bushnell Elite Tactical Scopes, and there are probably a few more. On the slightly more expensive side I would check out the new SWFA SS HD, IOR scopes, and Nightforce. Most of the ones I listed are going to be FFP but if you want to stick with SFP like the Leupold I think the Nightforce is the best option for only a little more money.

Like some others said, with the scope get matching turrets/reticle so either MOA/MOA or Mil/Mil otherwise you are just making it harder on yourself. As someone new to using a scoped rifle I think Mil/Mil is the way to go, it is a very easy system to pick up. Sight in for example, you put crosshairs on the target and fire. The shot is low and to the left, using the reticle you measure it to be .5 mils low and .2 mils to the left. You then just come up and over that amount (5 up and 2 right) as the turrets will be in .1 Mil per click.
