Brought my new Varmint gun to the range today for the first time.

Specs:
DPMS Lower w/ A2 Stock with upgraded titanium firing pin and DPMS Panther Grip
DPMS Sweet 16 Upper with 16" SS Bull Barrel
American Defense Recon-X Scope Mount
Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40
Harris Bi-pod (9-13" Swivel/leg notch)

Ammo:
Hornady TAP 55 grain V-Max
Federal FGMM 69 grain BTHP

Weather:
15 degrees F (fucking cold)
slight wind from 2 to 8 o'clock
light-moderate snow falling

I bore sighted the gun in at 50 yards, got on paper with a rough zero then moved out to 100 yards to zero. I was about 3-4" high in between 50 and 100. I was having a difficult time today because my finger tips were friggin' numb. I had to literally eye my finger in to the trigger guard. I couldn't feel the trigger (which I actually attributed as good; every shot was a surprise!). The massive tactical turrets on the Bushnell were very helpful as even with numb fingers and gloves (fingerless) I had no trouble with my clicks.

This thing is a keeper. I didn't get that "hit a dime" zero that I will want, but I got them all in the "10" ring by the end (~1.5"), and it's grouping well (all slightly to the left of the bulls eye). My new trigger, a Chip McCormick Tactical trigger, will help immensely once installed, I'm sure.

Altogether I shot 40 rounds (1 box of each) in about 45 minutes. Too damn cold for much longer.

As much as I like the Bushnell (it is very good glass for the less than $200 price tag), I may go for a scope with a larger magnification (likely a variable) so that I can adequately see the dots on my 21 dot drill. 10x at 100 yards is just a hair too small, though that may be mitigated by coloring the dots red for a better contrast.

One thing I noticed, which has been noted elsewhere, is that this upper is friggin' loud as all hell!

All in all it was a good day at the range. I had it to myself and the RSO.

I'll post some pictures of the gun and the range once I get them off my camera.

Re: New Varmint Gun

I have this same gun... It will flat out shoot. I'm shooting 75gr Hornday HPBT. Mine has printed several sub 1/2" groups. I'm still running the stock trigger though... I figure it will be a beast once I get something lighter put in.
