I recently purchased an Sps Varmint in 308. Thinking about a possible sudo-M40 build. Any reason to not get the barrel cut down to the M40's 25" or less and thread it. Eventually will change out the barrel completely, but thats a few years away.

Forgive my ignorance. I have an amazing gunsmith, but he's unavailable for conversation unless in person. I'd like to show up to the man knowing what I need from him.

Threading is a part of what I want. I guess the question is, what if any, are the advantages/disadvantages of taking an inch off. Is that even a thing on a stock barrel?
There is no harm in taking an inch off besides about 20 FPS velocity change and you may have to rework your load if you already had a known good load. The crown will most likely be much better after your Smith cuts and crowns it.

My goal is to regularly shoot 100-1000 yards. Is 20 fps really detrimental in trying to get to a grand? If so, he can re-crown it when he threads it correct?

To answer your question, I haven't personally worked a load, but my friend had "begun" to work one. I can not atest to his knowledge or ability though. I have 4 of the rounds and the data available if I want.

I have a broader build post in the bolt action section.

The Smith can recrown it with no trouble at all while threading. The 20 FPS won't matter for your goal.
