Rifle Scopes NEWB 700 build

Just purchased an SPS varmint, came with a Vortex Viper HST 6-24x50 installed. I will be getting new rings and rail. The specific question I have is, this optic should allow me to dail out to 1000yards with a 100 yard zero, correct? What, if any, would the benefit of adding an MOA base?

i had that same scope on a .308 with a 20MOA and it was barely enough elevation.

so not it would not work without a 20-30 MOA base

So if a 20 just got you there, if I went with a 30 MOA, I start losing shorter range adjustments? Again, forgive my ignorance.

Plus for long range in mind you want the erector in the scope to be more centered which provides a better image, which a angled base will provide.

Personally I would both get into a better scope with more travel and a faster cartridge.

but not much further.

i can't say for certain if running 30moa base will not allow you to zero at 100. i don't feel like doing the math in my head.

i know you don't want to hear this, but I'd rebarrel to a 6.5c and call it a day.... you'll end up there eventually, trust me

I hear you, but I'm not going to move away from the 308-7.62, just a preference. Now new glass, that WILL happen. But not until I can get behind a SB/NF/PREMIERE. Unless there are other contenders to be considered.

I hadn't said this here, over in the bolt gun section I explained that I picked this up for $300 and am gonna throw on a new stock, rings and rail, det bottom metal and stretch it out to a grand. Just for shits and giggles. I'm not a bolt guy and am admittedly amateur to PRS. I know what I want to do is possible all day long, but I've just never done it personally.

So are you advocating the 20 or the 30 MOA?

Just do the 20moa base. it'll get you there and you'll have no issues zeroing at 100.

if you ever get a chance to get out to beyond 1,000 you can still hold over in the scope after you max out your elevation. no biggy!

I don't personally have anywhere to shoot past a grand, so that's not really an issue.

In the future, when a new barrel is needed or I need to keep pushing, I plan to go that route. For now, I want to stretch this pig downrange. Economics and shit.

20 is safe with that HST.
