My BF and I shot our first longe range match recently. The match director helped us get our rifles sighted in and data entered into the ballistics app and refined on the range the day before the match. With the match director making the wind calls for us, I was pinging the 800 yard target with my precision AR, and my BF was doing the same with his .308 varmint rifle. We were both using vortex Viper gen2 scopes. Of course, we didn’t do so well making our own wind calls at the match, but neither of us finished last, so that’s something.

I’ve already ordered a custom rifle with high quality options such as a 6mm creedmoor barreled surgeon action, trigger tech special, mpa chassis, and Schmidt ultra short 3-20. My BF is taking a much more frugal route with the ruger precision rifle in 6mm creedmoor and he will put the vortex scope on it for now.

I was trying to get on here to see if he could buy some hand me down used gear that would be better, but I just learned he already paid for the ruger.

The price of the ruger seems alarmingly low to me. Just replacing the barrel on my rifle will cost more than his rifle. Has he made s bad decision? Should he view the ruger as a disposable rifle to be discarded when the barrel needs to be replaced? He has an atlas bipod for it and he will be getting a suppressor once the paperwork clears. Should he avoid upgrading it, or are there some upgrades that could be transferred over to a custom rifle later? Scope obviously. What about trigger? I don’t know if triggers can be easily moved from one rifle to another. Anything else? Thanks.

I’m a beginner as well and trying to decide between starting off with the Ruger Precision Rifle (RPR) vs. a custom. I am interested to hear the thoughts of more experienced members. Maybe consider changing the title of your post to say “Newb here. Questions on RPR and custom rifle” so more people will see your questions?

One of the top PRS guys at my local club matches said the RPR in 6mm creedmoor is a great starter rifle.
The RPR is not a “700 clone” so if you buy a new trigger for an RPR and decide to go the custom 700 clone route later he’ll have to buy another trigger. However, like you mentioned, scope can be easily moved from one rifle to another. Rings can as well as long as your sure the height he’ll need for the RPR will be the height he’ll want for his future rifle (hard to know). Muzzle brake as well, but the RPR already comes with one.

But remember, I’m a beginner too so my advice is just hearsay.

Thanks. I took your advice on the thread title. His suppressor is a dead air quick attach, so he will have to get a dead air muzzle brake when he finally gets his suppressor. That’s a bummer about the trigger. He originally looked at the Bergara, but the match director mentioned above steered him in the direction of the ruger for that price range. He got the ruger new for $795 at grabagun, but I think it is a gen 2 from the serial number, so he will likely need taller scope rings or a riser to mount his 5-25x50 due to the objective size.
