Hello. Well I've only came on here one other time when i was thinking of getting into long range shooting. Now I'm actually going to get into it. I've done alot of searching around the web looking for the answer to my question, and I get answers, I just don't understand it. What is Mil? And what is MOA? I understand MOA is minute of angle and that it refrences how far off the target a round will be at a given range. I just don't understand how that get's put into use. Also, my scope says that 1 click is 1/4MOA. So how do I find out what adjustments I need to make if I start shooting at 300 yards, rather then 75 yards? I know these are real newb questions, but I bought my scope and rifle and really want to get into this. I just don't know anything about what it takes. Thanks

Re: Newb Question

Oh boy.... are you really that delirious that you can't read any threads at the top of the forum?

Read every thread on here and get yourself educated before you hurt yourself: http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=378812#Post378812

I'm still extremely new at this game as well but had the sense to read up on everything I could find before I started asking questions.

Re: Newb Question

Moa and mils are like inches and cm's, you have a moa scope so I suggest at this time you forget about mils and stick to learning moa and getting on target first time at different ranges. Even if you have a mil dot scope put it at the back of your mind at the moment.

If you home load you should be able to get the bc of the bullet and velocity of the round enabling you to punch this in a ballistic calculater and work out the drops, hornaday is a good free one. If you buy factory ammo contact the manufactuer and ask for the data.

For example my .308 is clocking 2824fps with a 155gr Scenar. This means from a 100yrd zero I need 4 moa, my scope has qtr clicks as well so 16 clicks up and I'm on the paper.

Just keep it simple, work this out and then move on to windage etc. Just my opinion.

To answer your question a mil is short for "milliradian" which is a unit of angle. 1 Mil = 36 inches at 1000 yards. 0.1 Mil = 3.6 inches at 100 yards.

That is partially correct. MOA means minute of angle which is also a unit of angular measurement. 1 MOA = 1.047 inches at 100 yards.
2 MOA = 2.094 inches at 100 yards (2 x 1.047)

Since your scope adjusts in 1/4 MOA increments or .25 MOA at 100 yards, just keep in mind that one click will move the reticle about .25 inch per 100 yards. SO one click will be .50 inch at 200 yards, .75 inch at 300 yards, etc. For you I would zero the rifle at 100 yards first and then adjust your scope for your "come ups" at 200, 300, 400, etc.

Read this over and over and over again and just shoot as much as you can. You'll slowly start to understand.
MILS and MOA explained

Again if I am wrong with any of the above someone please correct me.

In addition to the reading and suggestions given above, do yourself a favor and sign up for the Sniper's Hide Online Training. Otherwise you will be "scatter-brained" from the get go as there is a lot of technical things involved that can be overwhelming when starting off. That way you can get started with a good base of knowledge to build on.
