Hello all! Newbie from MD, from suburbs of the Swamp. New to precision shooting by way of clay shooting and looking forward to learning and, God willing, after some years, sharing too. Thanks for having me.

Welcome aboard! Not sure what I think is harder, clays or rifles? Both have their challenges, and I suck equally badly at both sometimes!

Thanks for the idea! I think I need to train a little more before competing! Still in the phase of learning how to even zero my rifle!

Welcome! I am between DC and Baltimore.

I would also recommend MARS. I would recommend doing a training session through MARS to just get a sample and practice on different barricades before trying a competition. NVGC should be pretty close to you and they do a match monthly.

Swaim13 good call I forgot that MARS has lessons and that would help big time. jbonnie I am a big big fan of 22lr training. In our neck of the woods not a lot of opportunities for real long range. What we do have are public and private ranges and most are 200yds our under. When shooting 22lr at those ranges it's like shooting a 308 out to 800 or 1k. Also if you show up to a match and talk to a few people I almost garentee you will end up shooting someone's rifle. Some of the frendly people you can meet!!!

This forum is amazing. I had been taking my son to a .22 class that met at IWLA out near Poolesville but we didn’t keep up with it. Actually, speaking of Fairfax we both recently took an NRA sponsored basic rifle class with our AR15s instructed by a member of the Fairfax Rod and Gun Club at that place, which was great. The facilities are not as extensive as FRGC but I was just admitted as a member at Berwyn out in Bowie (pretty close to the PG trap and skeet facility). The people there seem so nice. I will definitely check out MARS!

Have any of the MD or Nova crowd been to the PNTC facility in Glengary WVA? They have a 1000 yard range available to their members, but I am only on the waitlist :-( and have not been there myself....

I haven't been yet, but I am going to try to make it up there this weekend for the Frontier range practice day.

I also just signed up to do my range and safety orientation with my son at AGC in Marriottsville. (I am pullling out all of the stops to have someplace to shoot my new 6.5 Creedmoor chambered rifle....) Although it sounds like I should look into enhancing our .22 capabilities so as to participate in the MARS events. He outgrew his CZ Scout and I don’t think our Browning SA-22, although a thing of great beauty, is the thing for this. Actually I still think we need a lot more training and practice before doing anything competitive.....

I am from Maryland (Carroll County) and have been shooting there for quite a number of years. Great facility and staff, lots of matches, practice days, etc.

If you are into long range, the Frontier range is excellent and they have multiple matches and practice days throughout the year. The Frontier practice days and matches are open to members and the public (at a slightly higher cost). Slots are limited and fill up fast. Steel targets are typically placed at 500-~1100 yards.

The 1000 yard range is typically open on Wednesdays and only available to members and guests.

They also have numerous 3 gun bays, a public rifle range out to 300 and a pistol range.

Sign up for an event or two, meet some of the members, and maybe you can get an invite 🙂

I am member now. Have only been out once. About 90 min from my place. Awesome range. But make sure you get all the info about Membership. Website is not as clear as it should be about range access. Lots of hoops that aren’t spelled out clearly when you look to join.

Can you expand on that a little? I was thinking about applying for membership.

Suggest you have a detailed conversation with them about range access, schedule and requirements to access all of their long range facilities. Longer distance ranges are not always open. Membership does not automatically provide access nor does taking any of their long range classes. Basic membership requires a additional feee to use longer ranges. Just something to keep in mind that is not detailed on their website.

Interesting, I didnt realize that. The website was a little confusing. It mentions a 1000 yard range with steel, I assume thats the Frontier range? That seems to only be open for matches and the once a month practice day. I saw the hours of operation and was a little surprised the Patriot range was only open once a week.

Like I said it’s worth a call to get the details. Make sure it’s a good value for you.

I had sent some questions to them by email but I will call too. Not sure they were checking the emails as I had not heard back. Will report to all if I learn anything super interesting beyond what already noted

The 1000 yard range is the Patriot range. The Frontier range is used for matches, classes, practice days, etc.

As DROWN said, definitely give them a call to get detailed info.

So I spoke with the folks at Peacemaker. The waitlist for joining is currently about 8 weeks. The 1000 yard range Is only open on Wednesdays and you need to do a separate qualification to use it. For those that are interested in introductory training for distance shooting but can’t make the dates for their scheduled courses if you call in advance and arrange it they can do private training (generally Thursdays and Fridays) for up to two people for 150/hour. I confess the 1000 yard range being only open on days when I am working is a little suboptimal. What I am discovering, which should probably have been obvious to me before, is that at least in Maryland/Nova training with a .22 LR trainer am is probably the path to go down..... Duh.
