I'm new to the tactical bolt gun arena. I'm wanting to build a M40 style 308 bolt gun. I've built several AR's from Bushy's all the way up to Larue's. I've worked on FAL's, AR10's and variants, own a 50,a few cans, I just need to get my tactical bolt gun fix. I have quite a few toys in the semi category just want a couple of nice MOA or SUB MOA precision bolts.

Here's what I've researched thus far. I'm wanting a beginner rifle first off. I have a gunsmith friend that can flute and thread for me to host my AAC 762SD.

Couple of questions.

Is it possible for me to buy a Rem Action, trigger, and barrel by itself? I'm not going to upgrade everything at once. What I'm wanting to do is get the base gun, then upgrade as I get funds.

Basically, what I'm looking for is the 5R barrel and action or the 700p.

I like the Mcmillan A2 but I'm thinking that I may need to opt for the Bell and Carlson Medalist Tactical to meet my budget constraints.

I'd like to upgrade the bolt handle as well. Any suggestions where to get this done and what has the best bang for the buck?

Is it possible to get a base gun built for 1000-1200? Then do the upgrading on the trigger and fiberglass bedding later and then adding a detachable box mag. I hate hand loading, semi auto's have me spoiled, I like to drop and lock.

Remember I'm a beginner, not quite on the level as most of you, but hopefully with all the expertise on here, I'll be there one day.

Thanks in advance for all your help. This is my first post here as well. I've lurked for a good while, just have never taken the plunge.

Keep an eye on the hide for sale section for good deals if you are going to buy a barrel separate and piece it together all of this stuff comes up for sale rather often.

A B and C will save you some cash most likely. Once again try the for sale section.

There are several smiths here on the hide that can do it for you. Runs about 65-75 bucks installed. Hooper, AZ Precision, GAP, LA Precision and just to name a few.

Re: Newbie looking for Guidance on an M40 style build

Here is what I have bought or am going to buy so far. If you have any suggestions, please offer.

Rem SPS 308 Tactical
B&C Medalist Tactical Tan w/ black spider webs
Seekins Detachable Mag Conversion
AZPrecision Bolt JLock removed
Larue Tactical SA Base
Leupy Mark 2 6-18x40
Mark 4 Rings
Harris 6-9 bipod
threaded 5/8x24
AAC 762SD and 18 T FH

Any suggestions? I'm a bit close on budget so Im going to hold off on a trigger job and just go with the 40x trigger that comes stock.
