Procrastination may have cost me. Had been eyeing a Savage Model 10FCP-K .308 but can't find one anywhere now. I have found the .223 version but my plan was to get an "all purpose" .308 caliber and branch out from there. Can any of you offer up make/model that offers similar features? I have read about the 700 variants (despite the recall issues), but what others should I consider?

This was going to be my first rifle and I'm looking forward to joining the club-hopefully sooner than later

If i was looking for an affordable all around rifle strait out of the box as a "all purpose" rifle I would snatch up a Savage 12 LRP in 6.5 creedmoor. It will do everything and more than a 308 win and Hornady factory match ammo is pretty inexpensive and shoots awesome out to 1000 yards on targets and is suitable for hunting also.

I have an fcp-k in 223 and love it. Extremely accurate. I dont think you would be bad starting off with the fcp-k in 308 unless you will be shooting beyond 800 fairly soon. Then the 6.5 creedmore like mentioned is better. The OP said this is his first rifle. So he probably will need access to quality factory ammo. 308 hands down is the easiest to find. If your considering hunting or tactical style weird positions the fcp-k is 8.9lbs versus 11lbs on the lrp. I would keep my eyes open on the classifieds here. Lots of good deals can be had. And also on snipershide boot action rifles for sale.

My first and current is the Savage model 10 in 308. As ChevyTruck_83 said, ammo is usually fairly plentiful and out to 800 it is supposed to be great, I have not shot that far with it. I put a Harris Bi-Pod and Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 scope on it with Leupold mounts and rings. I am right at $800 complete, though I bought and set it up in 2010.
