I am new to the long range and target shooting. I have a friend that likes to shoot and I have kinda got into lately, so here goes. I found a XR 100 rangemaster in .22-250 for a prety good deal, but I think that I am going to get one of the new Remington 700 SPS Varmints in .308. Anybody thank this is a bad choice? I think I have saw more upgrades to the 700 and I have always shoot a 700 deer hunting for the past 20 years and have never had a problem. what is somethings that i can do to the gun right out of the box to tighten up the groups. If they any adjustment tricks or little stuff that i can do myself. I know how to mess with them a little. Do you think this would be a good starter gun. What do the badger bolt knobs do and are they really helpful after the first shot. Is there anyway to make the bolt more smooth, is the xmark pro adjustable trigger a good one or do I need to replace it, if so what with. Any information would he a really big help, thanks,

Welcome to the Hide. Come on in and join the many and varied conversations.

Most of us older folk really appreciate it if you fill out your profile if you haven’t already.

Once again, nice to have you here.

Now on with the show... I agree that there are probably more aftermarket pieces and parts and whatnots for a Rem 700 than most any other model.

Stick with the factory trigger. Just adjust it down to about 2 1/2 pounds.

Put a good mount and rings on it with a good piece of glass. That should get you pretty close.

I would go with the R700... Theres plenty of aftermarket toys for it. I'll go ahead and tell you the new stocks are junk. Before expecting any amazing groups go ahead and plan on replacing it. Then check out the post on bedding the stock... This is fairly easy to do and it will mean more to you by doing it yourself... Also check out the posts on lug lapping. As said above twerk on the trigger a bit and get it down to where its comfortable but still safe, again plenty of post on how to do this. As with any gun be sure your scope is properly mounted and torqued. If your gonna get real serious about accuracy you may want to consider hand loading. Other than that you just need some trigger time... Good Luck!
