I read that on a bushing neck sizing die you want to get the bushing about .001 or .002" smaller than the size of a loaded round. Sorry if this sounds dumb but how do I get a loaded round without sizing it first. I have some 1x fired brass that I want to prepare. These were not fired in the intended rifle. How do I pick the correct bushing to size the brass? BTW, this is for the RCBS 308 GMM dies. Thanks.

Tell me the brass and I'll tell you the bushing to buy, lol.

It's faster this way.

FYI, I have the .332", .333", 334", 335", 336", 338", 339" and .340" for 308 loads, the latter two being step down bushings for my tandemly run Redding neck bushing dies.

I have once fired Winchester and Federal Gold Match brass.

If you don't have the equipment to accurately measure case neck wall thickness, just seat a bullet in an empty case and measure it. Then simply pull the bullet, resize the case neck and march on.

I cycle a batch of 50 Winchester cases a buddy gave me from some hunting stuff and my .332" bushing will just barely grip the bullet--I'm able to twist them out with not much force.

For most of the 'component' Winchester brass that I have, I use a .334" bushing for ~.002" of neck tension.

This .334" TiNi bushing works for some Federal brass that I have on hand. Most of my Lake City brass, I use the .335" and for Lapua, the .336" works well for most of us here.

You really want to get a range of bushings--maybe not as many as I have, but at least one for stepping down if you have a factory barrel and then a couple/few spread across the spectrum to help cover all of your bases.

~.002" for bolt guns and match loads.

~.004" for gas guns without having to crimp.

I will be using LC LR brass. On a side note, after how many firings can I expect volume consistency with the brass only sizing the neck? do I wait for the brass to form before proceed with load development?

.331" works for some Winchester, .334" works for the component brass you get in the bags.

Always measure Winchester brass to see if you have the stuff with the thinner necks. I mean...measure all your brass, but pay special attention to the Winnie stuff.

Sizing thicker walled brass with a .331" bushing is going to be too much tension, IMO.

For the .308, I measured (.336-.337 on the Federal Gold Match brass and .333 on the Winchester brass)

There you go, that Winnie stuff is thin and a .331" bushing would be in order. Additionally, the Fed. brass can use a .334" bushing like I suggested.

Both yielding ~.002" of neck tension, all other things being equal.
