Greetings.
I've never been a gun guy, never hunted when I was younger...didn't have anybody to pass that type of interest on to me and just wasn't interested.
I've moved home to Montana after being away for many many many years.
A friend took me to the pawn shop and helped me pick out a 270 Savage Axis for hunting.
He showed me how to sight in the gun at 100 yards and called it good.
Got our tags and on the first day I was hooked. LOL
So now..all of a sudden I'm looking at youtube videos, buying "Ballistic Precision" magazine..."Tactical Life" magazine...learning about MOA and drop charts.
The rifle I got is fine for what we're doing..hunting on the plains in northern Montana..but now I want MORE!
The rifle came with a bushnell scope..i don't know what kind..but I imagine the rings probably came with the scope and after going out 3 times..i decided to verify the accuracy and sighted in the gun again...it was way off..at 100 yards, my 3 shot group was close to each other..but 4" high and 4" to the right.
Dialed it back in and went out to 200 yards....wanted to go to 300 but it got dark.
This is not a precision rifle by any means...but now that I've moved home..less bills...better projects....i have the crazy idea to have a rifle built for me.
At this moment, i really dont think I'd ever join any timed competitions but I would enjoy seeing how far out I can shoot with precision.
I don't think I'd feel comfortable shooting a white tail or elk further than 200 or 250 yards (with my current setup).
But I really think I want to have a decent rifle built just for my own fun/target practicing.
I feel that in saying this..it could be likened to car guys...pointing at some kid with a really souped up 1967 Chevelle SS and only driving around town in low gear..not really getting the full enjoyment out of it...but that's what I think i want...a gun built with the components I choose.

Having said that...I'll have a ton of questions and don't know if I should post them here..or in each specific sub-forum.
example: The Nov/Dec issue of Tactical Life showed a gun build and noted that it had a "Surgeon 591 short action"...
When i go to the surgeon site..i see long action and short action (google search informed me of the difference) but I also see "single shot" or "repeater".
In my total lack of experience, I would assume single shot is like my 270...some cartridges in the magazine...pull the bolt, load a cartridge..shoot...pull the bolt..the shell ejects and a new cartridge is loaded...shoot..
But is a repeater...what it sounds like? cartridges in the magazine..pull the bolt..cartridge is loaded..pull the trigger shoot..pull the trigger..shoot..like a semi-automatic type of thing?
The reason I'm confused is the images of the single shot and the repeater look *exactly* alike to my untrained eye...
SO..that's an example of a question I'd have..
I have questions on barrels...chassis...pretty much every part of a custom build...
I guess I'll post in whatever subforum I think it should go in and just include a "if this is in the wrong post, please let me know" message?

anyway...glad to be here, looking forward to learning and hopefully one day, sharing pics/info of my build.

Until then...google, youtube and magazines for me.
Cheers
-Michael
