I picked up one of those Dicks Sporting Goods Black Friday sale Rem 700 ADL's because I couldn't pass up the deal and am now wondering what to do with it? I just got my build back this week from Long Rifles Inc in 6.5 Creedmore so I am good in that area.
I was thinking maybe hunting rig that could double as long range like a 300wsm? Any ideas? I am in no rush with this just exploring so any ideas are appreciated
It's a short action and I am set up to reload if that matters for your recommendations

Re: Next build???

he said hunting rig, either a 6.5 or a 7 saum would be awesome depending what bullets you wanted to use. even if the barrel life is less then 2k how many years hunting and occasional shooting you goin to take to burn that out if you have another rifle you shoot more in a regular short action caliber.

Re: Next build???

I know he said hunting Joe but 500-600 rounds is the expected barrel life of these hot chamberings. "Edit" to clarify the 6.5 saum or 6.5 wsm are what I'm referring to. The 7mm versions are getting around 2K life.

Just letting the OP know what's up.

Re: Next build???

I am definitely not looking for 500-600 barrel life caliber hunting or not. what's the barrel life on a 300wsm? What's the difference between a saum and a wsm? Why would you guys recommend these 6&7suam's? What is it about them that makes them stand out? And what barrel contour would you recommend?

Re: Next build???

The 6.5s and 7s have some very good BC bullets. Only heavyweight .30 bullets 210 215 230 can keep up or are better than 6.5 and 7s BC. Launching heavier bullets at the same speed as lighter projos will recoil more.

I'm having a 300 wsm built now, wish I would have went with the 7wsm and 160-180s

Just guessing but maybe 2500 for the 300WSM???

I'd say the advantage for the 6.5 is a large PBR window. For a 10" kill zone and a 475Y zero you'd still be inside said kill zone from up close to 550Y, not including wind of course, with less recoil also.

7mm version would be the best balance in compromise. .67BC for the the 180's going at 3000 fps pretty awesome in the wind. Even 162/168gr at close to 3100 fps is really good.

With the 300WSM and heavier bullets the main advantage would be energy on target. Personally I think the heavy 30 cal bullets need a long action and more case capacity to take best advantage of them. I have a 30-375R that launches the .743BC 230 Berger hybrids at 2960 fps. It's a well balanced cartridge for the heavy 30 cal bullets.

Re: Next build???

I concur. The really slick .30's really consume too much energy to be comfortable for me to shoot for an extended period.

For 6.5mm, I like the .260, although I do suspect it could be a tad light on LR crosswind performance.

For 7mm, I like the.280, and it performs well enough (for me, anyway) with 150gr bullets that I don't feel any need to make any excuses for it. I think it's a good example of putting an optimal case capacity to excellent use.

Re: Next build???

For that short action I would go with a 7mm of some type. 7 short mag gets my vote. Good bullet bc and a nice variety of them to choose from. Good luck with your decision.

Re: Next build???

I am glad you guys posted on here, because after checking this i was just about to ask about the pros/cons between a 300wsm and a 7wsm. I think I am leaning towards a 7wsm now unless you guys have any other suggestions in a 7mm for a short action?
