NextBolt NX5 Biometric

Re: NextBolt NX5 Biometric

Those do look interesting. If you get one/some, let us know how it goes. Mechanical devices do fail, but so many have stated to avoid electronic locks. I'm wondering if this one falls into that same 'aversion' category. Seeing as it "goes both ways"

For actual security, I've always been partial to the Abloy cylindrical lock/tumblers. That is, if Sergeant and Greenleaf aren't involved.

We had these on our barracks at Fort Lewis. They work well.

Re: NextBolt NX5 Biometric

I worked at a place that had those locks on the broom closet. After much use, the number 4&5 buttons wouldn't pop back out after you depressed them. We called a lock smith who opened it in about 10 seconds with a bump key.
A real secure solution would be an HID access card setup. It depends on your personal security needs, whether you want that level of protection or not. It's pretty pointless unless you put it on a vault door. Here's what I'm talking about:

Re: NextBolt NX5 Biometric

Thank you for the responses so far. Let me provide more detail.

I'm buying a house with a large basement. The intention is to live there for a long time which means children. I would prefer a keyless, secure lock on the door to the basement. This is a door that is accessed from inside the house via a high traffic visible area so aesthetics do matter but secondary to security. I'll be having my reloading and safe down there as well.

The reason for keyless is because they can get lost but worse they can be found by inquisitive kids. In this regards I'm thinking of kids other than my own who may have not been brought up around firearms or related items.

Please keep your suggestions coming.

Re: NextBolt NX5 Biometric

In that case, my dad put a latch on the top of the door when we were little. He had a combination padlock on it, so it was keyless. It would have been easy to cut off in a burglary, but it kept the kids out and it was discreet enough that people didn't always notice it when they came over.
I'm sure it was pretty cheap, too. Let me find some links for you...
It was one of these:

Re: NextBolt NX5 Biometric

Never used the lock you posted but it does look interesting and kind of cool. One of the drawbacks I do see is that you actually have to have the finger there to program it. If an emergency came up and you couldn't be there to open it, the next option would be to break it down. That's the reason we went with the one below. Not too expensive and looks pretty good. We had the same thing on the condo and it worked for more than two years without needing the battery changed. I did change it last year simply because I was replacing the door and already had the lock apart. It was great for us because we could program multiple codes just in case we needed to get someone in when we weren't around and it also has a key in the case of a bad battery or you forget your combo.

I installed a bunch of these at the US Embassy in Baghdad in 2009/2010 on projects we did there. I would have no issues using one at my house.

Re: NextBolt NX5 Biometric

QQ - that's the nuclear option! I think it's a toss up between the mechanical combo lock or the NextBolt. The NextBolt also has backup keys just in case. Which I can hide safely as opposed to regular keys on a chain.

The house is due to be finished in August. I'll update after installation and a little usage.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
