Night Vision

Re: Night Vision

You really need to set a price range of what is reasonable. I have first gen stuff i purchased almost 20 years ago and third gen stuff now. What i would of called reasonable today I would have never dreamed of spending 10 years ago Say under $500,$1000,$2500,$5000 or more

Re: Night Vision

You might want to set your parameters for use and then see what you can get. If you don't need to see any further than 40-100 yards and then only make out the objects than a Gen I night vision would work out for you and cost under $400.

As your distance and clarity needs increase so does the price.

I just sold one in optics for $250

You can check out the ATN webpage and see what you get as you move up from Gen I to Gen 4 besides the $5000+ price tag.

Re: Night Vision

look what search will get you! i was curious about this too. i need a hand held unit for simple observation in low or no light. my neighbor is a trucker and out of town alot so i keep an eye on his place and generally everything in the area. many times the dogs get riled up and there is something out in the dark. possibly a cat, maybe a cat burglar. i dont want to use the mag light and give myself away. but id like to be able to see whats out there. i see stuff in catalogs for as low as $100-$150 for a handheld. any hands on opinions of the low end stuff would be welcome, if anyone will admit to ordering from sportsmans guide that is, lol

Re: Night Vision

thanks for the link. im sure thats top quality gear and he is a great guy, but there is nothing there in the low end of the price spectrum. the cheapest monocular is $1500. im talking casual civi stuff. i just want to know if there is a reason to call the cops lurking in my neighbors back yard or if its a cat or possum making the dogs bark. just a simple $200 monocular. i keep seeing Yukon brand and russian stuff and ive never touched either

Seriously though, only YOU can define what "acceptable performance" is to YOU.

Gen 1 kit is about completely antiquated, Gen 2 is probably fine for recreational use, etc. & Gen 3 is the standard with Pinnacle/auto-gated tubes being the gold standard.

I would avoid ATN and other similar cheapie NODs entirely.

Re: Night Vision

Gen 1 is probably not worth messing with.

Gen 2, or at least the US mil spec gen 2 stuff will work alright with some ambient light, will be fine for citys, etc.

Now if you plan on doing hunting at night, killing hogs, etc, you pretty much need gen 3. Or go cheap and just buy a flash light. I would generalize that gen 2 has about half the spotting distance that gen 3 has.
