Rifle Scopes Nightforce ?? 50 or 56 Objective

Re: Nightforce ?? 50 or 56 Objective

Go with the 56 unless you want a slightly lower profile. Some rings fit the 50 really close to the barrel, almost a perfect fit. For example, my Near base sits the 50 so close to the base, it self levels +/- a couple of degrees.

Re: Nightforce ?? 50 or 56 Objective

I have shot fur in low light conditions, my buddy was a 3.5 x 15 in 50 and I was a 5.5 x 22 with 56, I have about 15 min more shooting light then he did. GO Big.

Re: Nightforce ?? 50 or 56 Objective

I ran into this same situation and I went with the 56mm. Did not regret it at all! 56mm did not look as big as I thought it would have been!

Re: Nightforce ?? 50 or 56 Objective

Depends on your set up. On my GAP 308, that extra 3mm puts the scope too close to the barrel, so I had to go with the 50. But I am not hunting with this gun. I agree with the others that have said if you are hunting or shooting at very low light, go bigger.

Re: Nightforce ?? 50 or 56 Objective

I bought both and compared them in low/no light. I couldn't tell any difference. I could use low rings with the 50mm but not with the 56mm. Sold the 56mm to a member here.

IF I could use the same rings and the cost was the same, then I might have gone with the 56.

Re: Nightforce ?? 50 or 56 Objective

I have a 3.5-15x56 and have no regrets. I'm praying that it'll still work with the same rings once I get my larger barrel installed however..

Re: Nightforce ?? 50 or 56 Objective

56mm objective is nice for low-light shooting. It will however put your scope higher, I had to add a Karsten cheek piece to my rifle afterwards. The weight difference is insignificant at 1 ounce.

Besides minimal size difference, and higher scope, I see no other disadvantages...only advantages.

Re: Nightforce ?? 50 or 56 Objective

The average size of a human’s eye pupil at night is 7 mm and in daylight it is about 4mm on average. If the optic give you a 7mm of exit pupil and you are using it for day use more than half the light will not reach the retina. I have also noticed if you are getting too much light and you look away you see light spots were ever you look and the targets look washedout. On a lot of my scopes I use a light reducer so I do not get the light spots and the washout is not there.

Size of bell divided by magnification = exitpupil. Hare are some examples.
56/22x=2.54mm
56/5.5x=10.18mm
50/22x=2.27mm
50/5.5x=9.09mm
The sweet spots for the 56 and the 50mm at Night and Day use.
50/7.14x = 7mm night use and for day use 50/12.5x = 4mm
56/8x = 7mm night use and for day use 56/14x = 4mm
You are really not getting much advantage over the 50mm. I feel there is a bigger disadvantage and that is you have to go with tall rings 1.00” at the low to 1.25” were the 50mm you can do 0.885”.

Re: Nightforce ?? 50 or 56 Objective

But with the ring question don't you have to take into account your barrel contour? I ordered my 3.5-15 today as a 56 because what does that little extra matter when I have a MTU contour barrel.

Re: Nightforce ?? 50 or 56 Objective

Alaskaman: If you refocus your scope -2 compared to your daylight setting you get another 5 - 10 minutes. Your nightvision is -2 nearsighted compared to your dayvision.

In the north, like Alaska and Scandinavia, dusk and dawn lasts a much longer time than in the lower 50. That's why the quality of optics are measured in minutes and why Zeiss Victory scopes always wins comparison tests.

I have guess that most people hiding here are on average 35-45 years old. If I'm right the maksimum usable exitpupil for these people is 5mm. In Scandinavia you have to be this old to be able to afford a 3-12x56 Zeiss Victory with no 60 reticle wich is the ultimate dusk/dawn scope set at 10x = 5.6mm :)
