has anyone heard of this before? i was under the impression the only mil spec versions were based off of the f1 models, but i came accross one for sale online. what actually makes it milspec?

Glued in reticle, it cannot be changed they apparently hand pick the glass for the mil spec scopes.
The Mil-Spec is a completely different product line. There are more construction changes than just a glued in reticle, as well as a more extensive QC process than even a normal NXS gets.
There are Mil-Spec 5.5-22xs out there, mainly for use on the Mark 13 .300 WM rifles.

The 5-22x versions will have 1MOA turrets on them is how you know, I don't recall seeing them with .25MOA The reticles are specific too
