Gentlemen,

I need a scope for a 375CT rifle. I have decided that the scope has to be a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50, but I am not sure which reticle, would be the best choice for ELR shooting. What should I buy?

Cheers

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

what do you use on your other scopes? i can tell you first hand that many of my friends have 5-7 different reticals on their rifles and dont have a clue as to how to use the retical as it was designed....if you have other rifles with mildot and understand how to use mildots, i would say stick with that...

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

Yes I know how to use the mil dot scale, and I actually use it :)

I have a S&B 5-25 with a P4fine reticle, the problem is that it dosen't have enough elevation, to reach out to 2.5km.

I need a crosshair that is very fine so it dosen't block the target on long distances, been there done that :-(

So what does Nightforce make, who can fulfill this? what do you guys use on your ELR rifles? seems like Nightforce is what CheyTac is using on there rifles...

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

I'd suggest the NP-R1. On the 5.5-22 you have 20 moa of hold over (each point being 1 moa) and then you have 10 moa on either side of center for wind (2 moa each). It's a nice - clean and thin reticle that's very easy to use.

Why not a 56mm objective?

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

The NP R1 is a good reticle for your needs. I used one in a 5.5-22x56 on a 408 Chey Tac to shoot to 2000 yards on an MOA sized target without a problem.

I'd suggest the 56mm objective also. Does give you a little brighter picture when up on higher powers.

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

x2 on the R1

All my NF have the R1. Thought about going with the R2 on this last one but ended up going with the R1 again. They are a great piece.

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

Just talked with CheyTac, they use Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x56 with NP-R1 or NP-R2 crosshair and zero stop.

Think it is going to be 5.5-22x56 with NP-R1 crosshair and zero stop. Thanks for your help and input...

Cheers

I use the MLR recticle, because I am used to it in my other scopes. But going MOA/MOA is fine, too.

And what Rob said: the 56mm objective is the one to get not because of low light capability but because of your consistent use of high maginification.

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

Would anyone recomend the 8x32 NXS for this rifle, or is the lack of verticle adj. and mirage at higher magnification the downside to that setup?

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

I wouldn't for those two reason, the biggest being the lack of elevation adjustments. The 5.5-22 has all you need, in both power and elevation, to shoot that far.

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

Good choice Kelle

I have the 56mm in mil dot / Mil turrets

Its not bad, but i think for massive distances that the cheytac is capable of, i would rather a thinner style reticle...

MLR, NPR1 or NPR2

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

+1 on the 5.5-22x56, I put one on my custom rifle in 416 B & I,m very happy with it.

I wanted to get the S&B but I needed to go mil to get the elevation & then it still wasn't as much as the NF.

With my set up & bullets I can get to a bit over 2500 yards by dialling

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

Why not get a MIL/MIL NF instead of a MOA/MOA? As a European it will be much easier to make adjustments.

When it comes to elevation adjustment, does the NF 5.5-22x really offer any advantages over the S&B 5-25x? I see that the NF is listed with 100 MOA internal adjustment, and the S&B IIRC has about 90. But with the P4(F) reticle in the S&B you can crank the magnification down, at 15x you'll have about 10 mils of reticle for holdover in elevation, using the elevation in the turret as well it translates into roughly 125 MOA. While the NF with a MLR reticle can provide about 115 MOA (100 MOA in the turrets + 4.5 mils in the reticle), 120 MOA with the NPR2.

If you are into MOA/MOA scopes though, the NF 5.5-22x will probably be your best bet. Especially if you want a maximum power of 20 or more. If not, the NF 3.5-15x is listed with 110 MOA. And the Leupold Mk4 16x has 140 MOA. But no doubt you'll have great fun with your rifle, regardless if its a NF or an S&B on top of it.

Additionally the NPR2 on the 3.5-15x is good for 30min holdover instead of the 20 you get with the5.5x22.

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

Well correct me if I’m wrong, but the NF is available in MIL click settings and that is the one I would like to buy...

I currently use an S&B PMII 5-25 on my AIASWM .338LM and it is a great scope, but it hasn’t enough elevation to take me out to 2500m (on the 375CT), that’s why I need a scope with at least 100MOA in elevation

Re: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 Scope

R1 or R2 holdover reticles are MOA scale and are finer than Mil-dot or MLR which is why they were suggested. The Nightforce Mil-Dot or MLR are the only MIL matching reticles at this time.
