For those who have used the different nightforce reticles, what are the primary differences between the MLR and Mildot? Does the MLR give a noticable avantage in ranging the target. I have used the Leupold TLR and like it very much. As I want to order a NF 3.5-15X50 soon I am trying to decide on a reticle. I am open to suggestions for other reticles as well. Most of my shooting will be 500 or less.

Thanks for any input.

Re: Nightforce reticles?

I like Horus reticles because it is subtended to .2 mil increments. It allows for accurate milling. It also allows quick use of rapid engagement techniques, the quick formula we use requires milling within .1 mil of a 12" tgt out to 600 meters. With practice it is very doable.
No matter what reticle,or mil relation formula you use, you have to train your eye at known distances. In my opinion this is more important then reticle type.

Re: Nightforce reticles?

The MLR reticle will have both a large dash (instead of the dot)at 1 mil radian. They will also have a half point dash at .5 mil radian. The Mil dot will have a dot spaced at 1 mil radian each. I like the MLR over the Mil dot for longer range target shooting, 800-900 yards an up. Tis is really a prefernce though. See if you can get your hands on one of each to look through them to decide which you favor.

Re: Nightforce reticles?

Its really is a personally preference. I will say I know a lot of die-hard MOA guys that I got to switch to MIL on MIL and they now prefer it. To me the MIL system is easy because everything is in 1/10s.

Re: Nightforce reticles?

After comparing the mildot and MLR, I went with the MLR. Mostly because I an not a mildot fan and prefer hash marks.

Re: Nightforce reticles?

Well, the more I study the reticles, the more I am drawn to the NPR's. This stuff is really confusing!

I spoke with a gentleman at NF who confirmed the MLR2 will hit the streets soon, but it will only be available in the 3.5-15 F1. Unfortunately, there are no plans to offer the MLR2 in SFP 5.5-22x NF scopes in the near future. That was a real bummer for me, but as a consolation he confirmed that NF is supposed to release some pretty awesome scopes later this year.

To the OP's question, I too like the Leupold TMR; the MLR is pretty similar and IMHO both are preferable to the standard mil-dot.

Re: Nightforce reticles?

to op, i started with mil dots years ago.

,made the switch to an mopa scope and man was it easy to learn. the biggest difference in ease for me is achieving second round hits if my first misses.

you simply put the crosshairs on the bulllet splash and count the moa hash marks till they are centered on target. adjust knob, center crosshair and send it. you can do the same with mildots but i prefer moa because my dials have always been in moa

I heard from a reliable source that late summer is the target date, but that is subject to change.

Does the 'super secret' include a higher magnification for the F1, such as 5.5-22x? If so, I may have to scrape some money together real quick like.

He basically said there are two new scopes coming out hopefully by the late summer. One was said to be a higher powered F1 scope with possible new reticle choices and maybe a 34mm tube. The other was supposed to be something more innovative and more expensive. He really didn't elaborate too much other than to say in a professional way that it will be very awesome.

Re: Nightforce reticles?

Hmmmm...I may have to put my current NF up for sale if a higher powered F1 is released.
