Hello everybody.
First post here.
Allow me to introduce myself: my name is Luigi, I am an Italian import in Colorado (been here for 12 years).
I have finally completed my "battery" of rifles, including a DPMS SASS in 308, a Savage BA110 in 338 Lapua an a Barrett 99 in 50BMG.
I decided to focus my attention first on decent quality rifles rather than scopes just in case somebody should wake up on the wrong side of the bed and decide to ban 50s or Lapuas...(OMG a sniper rifle...Civilians should not be allowed to own one!).
I don't see anybody looking into banning a certain kind of scope anytime soon, so that got on the back burner.

With the rifles out of the way it is now time to start looking into some quality optics BUT my funds are pretty drained at this point...
So here's my thought: purchasing one top of the line "tactical" scope (it appears that the consensus is a Nightforce), mount it on a quick detach base and use it on all three rifles.
With the main zero being set for the 308, I would note the necessary adjustment to bring me to the other rifles zero and return it to the 308 settings after using it on them.

This is because, given the cost of ammo, the 308 will be shot more often than the other two.

Of course this implies the adjustments (clicks) being completely reliable and repeatable and a zero stop feature would make things easier as well...
So, with the selected scope being a Nightforce 5.5-22x nxs scope with zero stop aand a Mil-Dot reticle, how feasable is this idea?
Can I rely on taking the scope from my 308, move it with its QD mount to the 338LM, dial the zero adjustment for that caliber, reset the zero stop and have my perfect zero on the 338 LM on the first shot?

What QD 20 MOA mount would you guys suggest?

Also, I understand that the 338 LM and the 50 BMG do not entirely stabilize until at least 200 yds.

Is that the most practcal zeroing distance in order to minimize the adjustment necessary between the different calibers?

Sorry for the long and somewhat chaotic post, there is so much I need to learn...

... I'm not sure if that is the consensus. That's a good pick, but it's not the end all, be all. If you're going to really reach out with the 338 and 50, then perhaps a look at S&B is in order. I would also recommend FFP (first focal plane) since it sounds like you want to purchase something correctly the first time. You may not understand it yet, but it is a very handy feature to have.

You will likely not get a perfect re-zeroing with any quick release base system despite what everyone says. There are some good ones (Larue, ADM), but every time you release it and put it on something else, it's highly likely that your POI will change slightly. That being said, it's not too hard to re-zero the scope.

I would personaly recommend the Spuhr mounts, even though they are not quick release. They do require that you undo four allen screws, but the overall design of the mount is very strong and likely to remain closest to your original POI.

Another choice may be the Near scope mounting system. I have yet to use it personally, but I have heard that it's pretty strong. That would allow you to get several bases on each of your rifles and then swap the scope from one to the other with relative ease.

Good luck!

Re: NIGHTFORCE SCOPE SET UP-PLS ADVISE

Luigi, may I suggest something like the IOR 6-24 x 56 35mm FFP MIL/MIL ILLUM MP-8 DOT instead of the Nightforce. I do own two Nightforce scopes and they are quality optics. But this scope has a not only a zero stop but a secondary point of impact indicator, basically allowing you to zero it on the 308, and use the secondary indicator for the 338. As for the 50, I might think of just throwing a SWFA 16x or 20X on her and being done. As mentioned above a quality setup such as Near or Spuhr may allow for more precise resetting when moving the scope between rifles.

Re: NIGHTFORCE SCOPE SET UP-PLS ADVISE

Thanks all for the replies, I appreciate the help.

Mjh, I do see your point and it looks like a very good alternative: the "double" zero stop feature (is that what it is?)would make things easier indeed.
I read IOR are also top of the line scopes, very durable and accurate.
It also sounds like the model you suggesting has a firstfocal plane (good point,UncleBenji).
The price is also there with the NF.
Hows the glass (resolution and such)?
Where can I read more about this scope?
In simple tems (yeah, right!) what is the difference between my current scopes 1/8 MOA adjustments and the 0.1 MRAD adj featured on this model?
Also, wher can I get schooled on the MP-8 reticle, so by the time I get the scope I can actually use it?

Re: NIGHTFORCE SCOPE SET UP-PLS ADVISE

Liberty Optics on IOR, believe that scope has modified mp-8 dot, very good reticle, 0.1mrad similar to 1/4 moa, enough adjustment unless your a re shooting f-class in my opinion. 1/8 moa really is pretty small adjustment, I personally need to change my elevation turret to 1/8moa on my NXS 12-42x56 for f-class.

Sounds like whats already happened in here in Australia.

I would highly recommend you give Scott ( Liberty Optics ) a call. He is a valuable resource when it comes to questions on optics. Having said this...I think you'd be extremely pleased with the glass and reticle of the IOR. IOR shares coating technology with Zeiss and also sources their glass from Schott ( German ). Sounds like IOR has fixed the weak internals found on earlier generations with their Gen 4 scopes...so it is now a well sorted package.

Good Luck,

Wayne

Re: NIGHTFORCE SCOPE SET UP-PLS ADVISE

So, I have been researching a little the IOR models.
From what I read it appears that the secondary point of impact indicator acts like a "high limit", limiting the elevation adjustment between the actual zero-stop and the indicator.
Is this correct?
Does anybody have a first hand experience?
I have tried to contact Scott at Liberty, but nobody answers the phone listed on his web site.
Also, I am a little concerned about mounting a 56mm obj on a ar10 type rifle, since it would have to sit quite high.
Would the 3-18x42 FFP MRAD be possibly a better choice?
How does the glass quality compare?

Re: NIGHTFORCE SCOPE SET UP-PLS ADVISE

Made an order with Scott yesterday, he's busy but leave him your number and he will get back to you. Unfortunately when you are getting a scope to pull double duty, it might not be perfect in every respect. Yes a 56mm obj on an Ar might be a little much, but does the other features outweigh the gain.

Re: NIGHTFORCE SCOPE SET UP-PLS ADVISE

So, an update...
After much reading and researching (mostly on this forum) I decided to go with the original plan: I purchased a NF NXS 5.5-22 x 50 and a ADM AD-RECON-SW QD mount.
A few factors pushed me in my decision, but mostly the NF track record and reputation for being a bullet proof scope.
Thanks to all those who chimed in, I appreciate your help and input.
Now, if I could only hit the target...
