Rifle Scopes Nightforce turrets tracking backwards.

A coworker of mine was having issues blowing the reticle out of cheap scopes with his armalite .50. I advised him he needed a better scope with an etched reticle. After talking him out of overpaying for a leopold mark 4, he purchased a night force nxs 8-32x56.

He returned from the range and said he loved everything about it except the fact the turrets are tracking backwards. After asking him to clarify, he said his point of impact (poi) was 4 inches low and 3" left at 100 yards. He adjusted 4moa up and 3moa right which should move poi true or closer to point of aim (poa). He fired another round which placed him approximately 7" low and some odd inches further left. He fired a few additional rounds which all fell near his post adjustment round. After he assured me he checked his scope mounts and action screws I'm left scratching my head.

I have not seen this issue first hand but I have no reason to doubt him as he is a well educated shooter. I also asked him which direction he was turning the knobs for up adjustments and is adjustments were what I would have made on my nxs which is flawless. His nxs is pre zero stop and pre high speed turrets.

Has anyone ever heard of this? And yes, I searched his via snipers hide google search engine and found nothing.

Re: Nightforce turrets tracking backwards.

Is it possible that he is used to running cw turrets and it is user error? Night force doesn't make cw turrets so i don't think the wrong parts got put in the scope.

Tell him to hold the scope on the POA and ajust to POI visualy dial it to the Impact.. </div></div>

I use this method to quickly dial in a scope. It works very well and is fast when done properly. One time however, I made a mistake of putting the crosshairs on the POI and dialed to the POA (Backwards). Had me confused for a few minutes, until I figured out my mistake and re did it the right way. Maybe your friend did this?

Re: Nightforce turrets tracking backwards.

Turning the elevation turret counter-clockwise(left) will raise the point of impact.

Turning the windage turret counter-clockwise(left) will move the point of impact to the right.

If that is not what is happening, there is a problem that I cannot explain as NF only threads the lead screws in one direction and to adjust POI as described above.

Re: Nightforce turrets tracking backwards.

Sir:

You may want to check to be certain that the screws attaching the scope rings to the scope are tight. This can cause erratic shifts in the point of impact and the problem you mention.

Ask me how I know.

Good luck,

Joe

Re: Nightforce turrets tracking backwards.

FWIW:

I watched a guy at the range fiddle with a scope endlessly.

The had the windage turret pointing up and the elecation turret pointing left. He installed the scope with a perfect 90 degree cant!

You cannot make this stuff up!

Tell him to turn the scope upside down

BMT </div></div>When I read the OP yesterday this is what I thought, just didn't say it. If that is what he did it would be interesting to hear if he admits it. If he didn't do something like that then the scope's adjustments are jacked up.

This is sometimes done with an Aimpoint, hence the turret markings up-l and up-r.

Re: Nightforce turrets tracking backwards.

+ 1 for what ASM1 said. I have made this mistake myself!

For a quick adjustment test have your buddy do the following;

Solidly sand bag his rifle so it will not move while aiming it at a target. Turn the elevation adjustment up while observing the reticle ( the reticle should go down).

Now turn the windage knob right while observing the reticle.( the reticle should move left)

Re: Nightforce turrets tracking backwards.

I have a NXS on a .30-378 that I thought was doing the same thing. I got pretty frustrated attempting a 200 yard zero. Went through a box of shells and probably got the barrel a little warm in doing so. Never did figure out what was wrong that day. Went back a week later at one last attempt before sending scope back and it was fine. Either the rotation of the earth was off or I was. Must have been the earth. Lol. Curious if it happens to him on his next trip.

Re: Nightforce turrets tracking backwards.

Thanks for all the post fellas. He is using the armalite mounts he got with the rifle. I dont know how the quality of the rings are as I've never used them.

Given the huge parallax adjustment knob I doubt you could even mount it at a 90 degree cant.

I was just thinking to myself and thought...he has been blowing the reticles out of cheap ass scopes on his .50 and his 300 win mag. I'm betting the nightforce is tracking properly and all of his BSA scopes are bass ackwards!

I'll mention the holding same poa and moving the reticle to the poi. I'm going to get him to the range with me so I can see it first hand to confirm. I too believe it is probably user error but I have see stranger things. I know some Schmidt and bender European models adjust the opposite of their American counter parts or so I was told from a dealer who had a guy return one for that reason.
