hello all,
im looking for any info pos or neg on the nikko stirling targetmaster line of scopes. i really cant seem to find any feedback on the quallity of these scopes. ive handled them at my local dealer, and they seem to be well built and reasonably priced. he assures me they are an excellant scope. but i really like the opinions of some more knowledgeable shooter. any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Re: nikko stirling targetmaster

I don't own the Targetmaster, but I do own the Nikko Stirling 10-50x60 Diamond w/Mildot. I'm not 100% sure but I think the main difference between the two are the lens types. However, FWIW, mine has a very crisp and clear view, reticles track well and I have been very pleased with the scope. Owned it for a year or so now.

Re: nikko stirling targetmaster

What is an 031?

First and foremost, never trust your local gunshop dealer, he is a moron and has incorrectly mounted more scopes than any other 5 morons combined.

There are (MUCH) better ways to spend your money than on Nikko Sterling.

On what is it going, what will you be doing with it, what is your budget maximum, what is your experience with scoped rifles, at what ranges will you be shooting?

There are far better scopes for just a little more.

This is where mine sits.

Re: nikko stirling targetmaster

thanks for the quick responses, first off i signed up for this forum on my phone so i made an error while doing my user name its actually supposed to be usmc031194to98. the scope will be sitting atop of an armalite ar 10t, and i will be useing it for hunting and target shooting. my budget is around $600.00. ive also been looking at a millet trs1, and the fixed 10x42m super sniper.

Re: nikko stirling targetmaster

In the $600 range there is plenty of better choices out there. Nikko is a good scope but not when there are better choices out there for the same price.

The max distance you are going to shoot would be great for choosing the right magnification.

Re: nikko stirling targetmaster

Max distance would be helpful.

My ar10 is mostly for paper and hogs, and it wears a 2.5-10X.

I recommend (if 500+ yard shots will not be the usual, that you look at the 3-9X SuperSniper from SWFA, great scope and in your price range.

Personally, I'd avoid Millet at this time, they were recently purchased by Bushnell and quality control seems to have slipped - or so I hear from reputable dealers.

Let us know max range and we can reocmmend specifics. Without that, a good 3-9 will do most thigns an AR10 can do well.

Re: nikko stirling targetmaster

that good to know about millet. the longest distance i shoot is about 800 yards, wich was done through a leupold vx111 3.5x10 on a rem 700 sps .308 that now belongs to my wife.i would love a mark 4 but its just not in the budget.

Re: nikko stirling targetmaster

If you love the Mk4, get the 3-9SS, the glass is superior, the turrets are far better, it's an all-around better piece of gear.

And, though that is opinion, it ain't just mine.

Re: nikko stirling targetmaster

i will most likely be getting the ss. but heres another question, as i mentioned before, up till now ive been useing a vx111 3.5x10 and i really cant remember takeing it off the ten setting rather i was shooting it from 100 yards to 500+. so isnt the fixed ten just as good a scope as the 3x9 for around $200 less. btw i really appreciate all the feedback.

Re: nikko stirling targetmaster

The 3-9 has better glass than the older fixed 10X (the fixed 10X isn't bad, it is actually quite good for the price.)

Better glass trumps more magnification, as a general rule.

I think you will like the view through the 3-9 at 9X more than the Leupold at 10X.

There have been a few reviews here and abroad comparing the SS to various Leupold scopes, and I have yet to see one that says Leupold is a better optic in any way.

Re: nikko stirling targetmaster

well you are certinly makeing my decision easier. i thought i read somewhere that theyve made a lot of improvements on the 10x glass which is one of the reasons they won the navy contract.either way ive definitely decided on a ss now which model 3x9 or 10x

No sir, your eyes do not decieve you, that is not my hunting rifle, that is my budget precision rig (SPS-tac .223, choate tactical, EGW base, Burris XTR rings and TRS-1).
My Tac 2 is currently residing on my Savage 12, but when I can swing new glass for that one, the tac2 will be returning to my Sendero 7mm Mag.

Re: nikko stirling targetmaster

I would recommend the 3-9, solely because I remember once losing a shot at a nice buck because of too much magnification. I had been using my 3-12 on 12 power to scan across the swamp, forgot to change it back to three power and a very nice buck stepped out of the trees, not ten feet from my stand, I slowly raised the rifle to get a shot and all I could see was giant tree branches in my scope, next thing I know, the deer just sauntered off before I could do anything. The giant trees were the twigs at the end of the branches. I learned my lesson that day and keep my scopes on low power unless I need the magnification. With the excellent glass reported in the SS 3-9, you may find that you don't even bother with cranking up the magnification.
