just got my 5R yesterday. i am looking into a nikon monarch scope. i am thinking the 4-16, or 5-20. the monarch X just seems to be a bit out of my price range.

the intended use is hunting, plinking out to 300 yds for now.

no competition shooting.

i am just looking for a scope a bit better than my prostaff.

i really do not know a whole lot about higher end scopes.

any input would be awesome.

Re: nikon monarch

I have a 4-16. It has been passed down from a lot of different rifles. I actually used it on my 223 to make hits out to 800. Always returned to zero win no issue.

Good scope.

Re: nikon monarch

the 4-16 is plenty, especially better for hunting having the (abeit slightly) lower end mag. Don't hesitate to buy them. I thought I needed a "better" quality scope, so I bought a Nightforce NXS 2 weeks ago. While it is obviously more sturdy than my Monarch, I cannot notice ANY difference in the glass. ...Most guys here will call that blasphemy haha I also like to dial for ranges, and since it's my prairie dog gun, it gets dialed ALOT. The monarch has functioned perfectly so far, but granted it's only two years old.

I know you didn't ask for a comparison, point was, If you don't compete and aren't invading Normandy, never think twice about getting the Monarch. They are fine scopes, and incredibly well priced for what you get. You will like it. ...except for the BDC reticle, garbage, don't get it! ha

Re: nikon monarch

i told my wife that keeping the prostaff on it was like taking a fat ugly girl for a ride in a ferrari! it just shouldn't be done!

i think she bought it, and didn't give me an argument on a new scope.

Re: nikon monarch

I've had trouble with two Monarchs this past year. Both unable to hold zero. One was brand new. After sending it in twice, Nikon replaced it. That one worked.

I'm still working with Nikon on the other one. They replaced it after sending it in three times. I'm waiting for some improvement in weather so I can test it out.

Re: nikon monarch

Not more things to go wrong, and not quite fussy, just...annoying. To some. You have to turn the turrets twice as much for the same adjustment. And unless you are a benchrest shooter, you just don't need them i.e. if your gun can't shoot 1/8in groups, what good is it to be able to adjust in that small increments? Especially such close ranges. My monarch has them and I hate it haha But the other side of that, since you said out to 300 yards, it wouldn't be a big issue as you won't be needing to adjust very much. Another plus for the lower power is the monarch's have a horribly small amount of total vertical elevation. The 5-20 only has 34 minutes total. The 4-16 has 40. Still not great at all, but you might just need that extra 6 down the road.

The lower power is better for hunting, you don't have to search around as much to find your target in wooded areas/shorter range. And 16 really is all you need for long range if you so decide to got here. I'm a magnification whore, I like having all I can get haha So I know what you're thinking, you want more mag to see better and what not. But I rarely use it. Even shooting small prairie dogs out to 400, 500 yards (ok, missing them at 500..), I've notice I rarely turn the mag up past 18x, and usually it stays around 13x to 14x. I don't have a spotting scope, so the only time I crank mine up to 24x is to look at paper targets.
