Nikon p900 as a spotting scope

I have one and used it on an elk hunt in Kentucky. It worked great for that application and I could see it being nice to have on hand if you want to video your hits or even just see them in a pinch. That said, I don't think it makes for a suitable substitute. As an electronic device it is dependent on batteries to operate and it could fail or malfunction at any time making it worthless. It also lacks the clarity and resolution of a quality spotter and you do not have control over the focus like a spotter provides. I sold my Vortex Razor spotter and bought the P900 thinking it would work out great, I'm now buying another spotter (but keeping the P900).

I'll also add that the advertised 83x zoom is far different from what you would see through an 83x spotting scope. The field of view at 0x is enormous. I'm far from an expert on optics but if I had to guestimate I'd say the 83x P900 is probably equivalent to maybe 50x in a spotting scope.

Here's a video I shot with the P900 while we were hunting elk in Kentucky. https://youtu.be/Y34nZZbyVxQ
