Hate crime laws are bullshit. If you are driving around shooting at people, you need to be executed. Our justice system would not have responded with a relative slap on the wrist, 150 years ago. This kind of thing would have landed one at the gallows.

Some years back, both my cousin and her now-husband were working at a bar downtown (she was a bartender, he was a bouncer). This is on a crowded public street, plenty of other bars, shops, etc around it and plenty of locals and tourists. Car slow-drives up, windows come down, and the three or four wannabe gangbangers open fire on the bar before trying to zoom away. One of the other bouncers, real big guy, takes some bullets (you couldn't miss him, he's that big), but the worse part is when the shitheels are trying to get away, they turn too hard and end up slamming into a streetlamp, pinning another of my cousin's friends to it. He died, the guy with bullets in his back lived, and I don't know what happened to the wannabe-gangbangers but they should have been hanged for it.

That seems to be the trend in the Atlanta region for more affluent areas to break away to form their own city and develop own police and other services. I chose to live as far away from ATL as I could and still make the commute to work. Now that COVID changed the whole work downtown model it will be interesting to see what businesses and even colleges decide to maintain facilities and campuses "downtown". The whole "move downtown so can walk to restaurants, etc." has been turned on its head and the rush to the suburbs is "deja vu all over again".
