Rifle Scopes Noob rifle set-up questions.

Hey everybody, I just purchased a Remington 700 SPS 20" and I want to get into long range shooting. I'll be 100-500 yards mainly but want to do around 1000 if I find a place around me.

1. I have been looking at a Nightforce 20MOA base but wonder if it's necessary to have 20MOA with the "Velocity 1000 Reticle"?(Nightforce 5.5-22x56) If not I was looking at a Leupold Mark 4 base.

2. Because it will be quite awhile before I can afford a scope so expensive, is the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 a good start? Which base would be best with this? I want to shoot asap and something around $450 would be best for me.

3. How do I know what height rings to buy? Is it a personal preference or will certain scope not fit (contact the barrel) if the rings are too low?

1. Cant answer that one
2.The Vortex will do fine. I have a Viper HS and it is really nice for the price.
3.Personal preference unless your objective is unusually large.

If buying a NF scope....I'd recommend looking at NF rings. Something in their medium height would work.. 0.8?? was the height I got for my Rem. 700 Milspec and NXS 5-22X by 56mm.
