I am wondering what this rifle/ammo is worth. All I know about it is what I am posting...

It's a Remington custom shop Rem 700 in .308 that was made up to look like the VS SF II. The VS SF II doesn't come in .308, but the Custom Shop apparently made it that way. It's got a 26" ported barrel that is stainless with grooves running the length of it. It has a Harris bipod mounted and a Konus Pro 3.5-10x44mm Illuminated scope sighted in that come with it.The Bell and Carlson stock is, from all the advice given on INGO and many other sources, the best stock for accuracy. The trigger is also custom with a break at about 1-2lbs. I had Leupold stainless scope mounts and rings attached to match the barrel and receiver. This rifle has only had but maybe 20-30 rnds shot through it. It still has the factory grease in the trigger housing and some parts on the receiver. It will also come with 100rnds of 308 namely, 40rnds of Magtech, 18 Hornaday PSP, 18 Remmy Core lokt, and 20 Winchester silvertip.

Re: Not sure where to post this...

You might try looking in the for sale section. If that fails, let me know, I'll give you 100 bucks for the whole kit.

Another route would be to check gunbroker for guns from the Remington Custom shop. I seem to remember seeing a couple recently that went for mid teens, like 15-1600.

As for the scope, go look up what the new price on it would be and take 60% of it. That's about what the resale price on anything but the absolute best optics end up going for.

The ammo is worth 80 cents a round roughly.

Re: Not sure where to post this...

The for sale section is the correct area to post it. Only problem is that you have to have at least 51 posts to list anything. Just the rule here.

Re: Not sure where to post this...

Sorry guys I am not looking to sell this I am trying to figure out if it is worth the trade I am doing for it. I apologize if anyone thought it was a for sale ad. I legitimately need to know value and being a "custom" 700 figured this was the best place to come a calling. Thanks for the tips though.

Re: Not sure where to post this...

You mentioned that it was a custom. Who did the work and also what was done for the gun. Do you also know the model for the stock rifle? Was it a SPS, PSS, Sendero, etc... Did you commissioned the custom work, or got it from someone? Having the spec sheet on the custom portion would be helpful in estimating the value of the gun. Also, a picture perhaps would be helpful as well. Are the bipod and scope part of the overall estimate as well?

Re: Not sure where to post this...

Remington's Custom shop is who I am told built it, yes the glass, ammo and bipod stay with it. I have no idea what the base model was, I did not commission the build and I am not sure if the guy offering it up for trade did either.

I have a call into the guy with it to see if I can get the info. I have a pic of it I can post in a few.

Re: Not sure where to post this...

If I were you, I would also ask round counts down the barrel and twist rate also. Looks like a S/A action with a 30 cal barrel.

Remember that you can get a SPS rifle for about $550 new if you look hard enough. Just something to gauge your price range. Don't know about the scope, but the bipod is probably another 60-80 dollars. Depending on the price of scope, with just gun and biopod, base (whether or not it's cant and if so, how many MOA) is any where about $475-550. Just a guess only.

Re: Not sure where to post this...

More info just in...

All below is from the current owner

"The B&C stock is what it has on it. I believe the base Remington used was the VS SF II. I bought it used, but the previous owner stated they hadn't shot it but a few times. I only shot it about 20 times to get it sighted in. However, I used the magtech ammo and I don't think it did a very good job. It's just plinking ammo for sure.
I don't have a spec sheet for it but I'm sure Remington would have it on file. When I called them they said it was a custom build from them and that's all I got. However, I've been told that what I got was a steal."

Re: Not sure where to post this...

Did the original seller tell you why the port (s?) on the distal end of the barrel?

Just curious to know who that affects the velocity and pressure?

Re: Not sure where to post this...

Nope and so far I didn't ask, I wondered about them being so far back too, but looking at a mossberg shotgun in my safe the ports are about 1 1/2" back from the end of the barrel. I'm gonna ask Remington tomorrow. hopefully they will know the answer.

Re: Not sure where to post this...

OK so I talked to the guy at Remingtons Custom shop yesterday. He told me that according to the serial number this is a plain jane VS SF in .308 built 6/4/98 and the .308 has since been discontinued in this caliber. The guy I am getting it from got from another guy that obviously made false claims. Anyway I am still doing the deal as he sweetened it more since it isn't a custom afterall.

At this point I am sure the barrel was ported after it left the factory as it has factory markings and stampings on the barrel.

Thanks for all the help guys I appreciate it and value the knowledge here.

Re: Not sure where to post this...

It will say Remington across the butt pad if it is a factory stock. If it is aftermarket, it will say H-S precision. It looks just like every other H-S built stock one sees on Rems., be it a PSS a 5R, a Sendero, or whatever. Rem is using some Bell and Carlsons on one Tactical model now, I believe, but that is not one of them.

Re: Not sure where to post this...

Thanks. The company I work for is based in Corydon, IN, just N of Louisville. Have enjoyed Southern IN, never got all over the state. The people there are great to work with. Stayed at a motel there in Corydon and one morning they had biscuits and gravy. The lady cooking asked me "Aren't these the best biscuits and gravy you've ever had?" I had to tell her no. AG

Re: Not sure where to post this...

If you remove that stock and look just forward the recoil lug, these items will help determine the manufacture.

Just forward the recoil lug=Dime sized date stamp approx .150 deep=HS
Just forward the recoil lug=Skeletonized forearm in barrel channel=Older HS Stock.

Just forward the recoil lug=Oval part number stamp=B&C

Appears to be an HS stock by the looks of the paint (web), but not 100% sure with your photo's.
HS produced the majority of these stocks.
