Not this Chinese shit again...

Not familiar with it, but if you're attacking through tor it can be ineffective because a lot of folks maintain a list of entries/exits in a blacklist for just that purpose.

Damn. Impressive. How'd you get involved in this stuff if I may ask? I'm gone be graduating hopefully this fall/winter in IT Security. Already got some jobs apparently lined up.. any suggestions on do's/dont's in the industry in general? Honestly Im only gonna work long enough to save for a ticket to France + little extra for possibly necessary living expenses, to take my shot at being a Legionnaire. Thats the current plan anyway, maybe Ill change my mind down the road but far as I can remember I can't see being satisfied as anything except a soldier.

I dunno, really, how I ended up here. Strange life choices, healthy dose of curiosity, complete lack of fear, and a big interest in electronics/technology. Those things combined to take me to some places no one in any line of my family has ever even thought about going.

As far as dos/don'ts go... I'm probably not the best person to give advise on that. A lot of my colleagues make note of my 'cavalier' attitude, and how much of a 'cowboy' I am. What worked for me would likely have gotten anyone else fired/imprisoned/killed.

I will say, though, that if you're ever sitting there, and you're bored, you're wasting time. Every day you should be working on something interesting, and that you learn a lot from. Do shit that is uncomfortably difficult as frequently as you can, and as well as you can. Especially shit you're not supposed to be doing (whether that be because of some policy, or because it's someone else's job to do that, or for some other reason).

Also learn a programming language.

Have you messed with SSH tunnels yet?

True story time, circa Jan or Feb 1976
(Shop forman did two tours in V/N as a UH1B crew-chief.)
Service manager hired a new guy, on Friday to start on Monday.
Shop foreman, comes up to me an says we just hired a gook from S V/N
Me, OK, does he speak English?
SF, yes but very broken, but that's not what I'm worried about.
Me, you think he was batting for the other team?
SF, yes I do based on the questions I ask him.
Me, well we'll see how it goes on Monday, won't we?
Monday I come in early at 1130 (My shift starts at 1300) as soon as I seen him an he seen me we both froze, I know damn well I had shot at an hit his ass in what we called The Cut back in 1965 but he was wearing a NVA uniform. Took almost a week before we spoke, but after speaking to him I'm 90% certain it was his ass an he carried a big scar in his left shoulder. I never seen it but other guys said they seen it while he was changing clothes many times. He only worked there for about 4 months then promptly quit. No one ever knew where he went but it was no where in or near Tampa Fl that any of us knew about an we ask everybody we knew in the repair fields. To this day I still think it was him!

Just a big pussy, truth be known.
If I could have proved it was him before he quit who knows, but people do end up in gator cages, or as shark bait out at the bird racks in Fla. all the time.
I know Bill (SF) had thought's alone those lines as well.

Thanks for responding sir. No sir I aint familiar with SSH tunnels..??
May I ask what exactly it is you do as your job?

And yes sir, I'm close to graduating so I've completed my Intro + Intermediate + Advanced Programming courses. Our school's curriculum for whatever reason though has it set up where everything we do/did is all in Java (I'm sure you're familiar w/ Java Eclipse). I actually originally wanted to go in to Software Dev but after finishing my main core required programming courses, I realized I'd had enough a that and most definitely don't want to strictly code for a livin. But I was so far along that I didnt wanna make a drastic change in my major, so I switched it to Security since it had a lot of the same prereq's that I'd already knocked out and cryptography and such actually does interest me..

Also, just a random question - what do you foresee happening to folks like me(and you if your area is security) when/as quantum computing & quantum based encryption, etc become more and more widespread? I see theres some gentlemen out there working on post-quantum encryption?

@Gunfighter14e2 - what round did you hit Mr Nguyen with? You seem to favor the M14 and since it was fairly early on(1965), so I'm guessing 7.62 ? Did it hit bone? LOL either way like said above I'm sure once he saw ya he was thinking "g0dd@mnit, all this time I thought I'd gotten away from this bastard!" Hahaa ! Come up to post in the Vintage section when you can sir, your contributions would be much appreciated!

Being in security, you ought to familiarize yourself with SSH tunnels and SOCKS proxies. Both are useful for doing things you're not allowed to do, and SSH tunnels in particular allow you to do things via other nodes on the network.

You can, for example, compromise a linux mail server and use the mail server as a proxy for conducting further attacks on other machines you otherwise wouldn't be able to access. Also works great for proxying RDP traffic (remote desktop protocol, used on windows servers for remote administration), among other things.

For work, I do a lot of stuff. I personally do things that other folks might have the following titles:
Network administrator
System administrator
Cloud Engineer
Cloud Architect
Dev/Ops
Telephony Network Operator
Tier 1-3 support
NOC Engineer
Senior/Lead Software Engineer
Director of Engineering (my actual title, I think)
VOIP Engineer
SOC analyst
Penetration Tester
Sales Engineer
Software Evangelist

All kinds of shit.

As for quantum stuff, I really don't know. I probably should, but I don't. I'm guessing it'll be a big deal until it isn't.
