Noveske SS barrel or Chrome?

Re: Noveske SS barrel or Chrome?

Depends on what you want it for. All other things being equal, SS will likely give you better accuracy and chrome will give you better durability (it will take a lot more rounds to shoot te barrel out)

Re: Noveske SS barrel or Chrome?

My understanding is that the Noveske stainless are made by Pacnor. I would consider them an upper end match grade type barrel. For what you said you are looking for this seems the way to go.

I am not sure if Pacnor also makes the chrome lined barrels, but I kind of doubt it.

Re: Noveske SS barrel or Chrome?

The chrome-lies barrels do not have the accuracy potential that the SS barrels do. You have a combat barrel versus a match precision barrel. If you want the accuracy, go with the SS. If you want a high round count, go with Chrome. SS will go about 10k-15k rounds, while the chrome lined barrel will last upwards of 35k-40k rounds due to the hammer forge process.

Pacnor provides the blanks for their SS barrels. Noveske does the machining.

Their CL barrels are FN barrels that Noveske profiles.

** I don't know this for a fact this is the consensus on the interwebs from the more knowledgable. **

Source for these round count estimates? What is the accuracy std. at these round counts? Curious.

The increased service life of chrome lined barrels has nothing to do with hammer forging. There is no conclusive evidence that hammer forging increases service life at all, and there are lots of chrome lined barrels that are not hammer forged.

Re: Noveske SS barrel or Chrome?

I have a 18in SPR 1/7 with 7PT rifling. This is the energizer bunny of barrels. Very consistent performer. Not what I would call a true Match barrel. I have a Wilson in a White Oak Service Rifle upper that edges it on accuracy, but not by much.

The Noveske groups are solid .8 to just over 1 MOA. This is with 75/77gr bullets shot from the magazine. The thing that amazes me is that it will maintain this accuracy with minimal attention to the barrel. The other observation is how much better it seems to shoot steel case ammo (WOLF/TULA) than other ARs.

Choose SS for anything but but mag dumps, very high round count carbine training and the like. If accuracy over practical distance is your ultimate goal this is the way to go.

I think that Noveske ss barrels are made out of a harder grade of stainless, 410 I think? I'm sure others with more intimate knowledge will chime in to correct/add to the metalurgical specs.

Good luck with your bulid.

Re: Noveske SS barrel or Chrome?

Have a 14.5" N4, 16" SS and 18" SS. I cant say that any misses with any three rifles have been due to the rifle....

IMO, an 18" N4/chrome lined with rifle gas would be the perfect barrel.
