Am I correct in thinking that the Nucleus will accept Savage prefit barrels with the savage barrel nut without any modification to the barrel?

The Savage barrels will not headspace on the Mausingfield without milling a few thousandths off of the breach face.

My mausingfield barrel is setup with a Savage barrel nut and it will headspace on the nucleus. However I have to back it out a bit, around where I imagine the barrel would work on a Savage rifle.

On a side note, the Nucleus feels awesome. It has the best feel of any action, I've ever messed with. If its dependable, its gonna take over.

My Shillen prefit went on with Barloc and so would with a barrel nut. Headspaced fine. Lots of video I did in the Nucleus video post.

Also, see a pic of another build in the Nucleus Pictures post that looks to have a barrel and barrel nut.

I may tear it down again to show a Nucleus with prefit and barrel nut on video if it would help. You probably know the drill though.

Glad to hear you are liking it. This is my first custom, and it could very well be the last style. I would own another...

Out of curiosity which savage prefit didn’t work on the mausingfield? I have a standard savage prefit lothar walther that works fine, I hadn’t heard some may have issues so just want to make sure not to try one that may have issues. I have a Bugnut that works but that is more customized and have a proof prefit I have yet to try.

Yeah, I'm not sure what was meant by that. I have Mausingfield serial number 40 (and two other newer ones) and have used a bunch of savage pre-fits; including Criterion, McGowen and Savage and have never had a problem getting any of them to head space. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, or maybe I misunderstood the post above.

It was a Hardy Carbon Fiber prefit barrel that would not work. Maybe I got a bad one. I'll definitely try another

There can be clearance issues with the extractor hitting the breech face before the head space is correct. It depends on the case exposure. I think the majority of the prefits fit fine.

Anyway, to the OP, should be no problem to run Savage small shank prefits in the nucleus as you described.
